Casing ?? How much colonized substr8 is to much??

? have gone through enough casings to make me think that the more colonized substr8 that you use the bigger the mushies from 1" to 4" but how much sub. is to much. Could you use 5" to 8" and bigger mushies or more flushes?
What is your average substr8 depth BRF and or Grain, straw for your casings

True the bigger the substrate the bigger the mushies. I think anything over 12" would not be necessary. I just made a 6" substrate layer of straw/poo spawned with rye grain. Hope this anwsers some of your questions.

What would you all say is the optimal colonized substr8 depth for a casing being either dung, straw, brf, or grain.

i think 4-6 in is plenty, different substrates will give different yields. Shit is going to be the best, along with straw.. grains and brf wont give nearly the same yields.

Just answered this in another thread too.
I liked to use 6 inches substrate depth (bulk substrates that is) and 2 inches casing. I found it to be the best combination of depths in terms of yield, fruit size, and substrate efficiency.
Substrates can be as deep as 16 inches. I think anything deeper than 10 is crossing the line into wastefulness.
The deeper the substrate layer, the higher the yield potential, but the lower the substrate efficiency. This means that if you have 1 cubic foot of dung, (12"X12"X12") it will yield more than a 6" deep sq. foot (12"X12"X6"), but the extra 6 inches of depth would be better used in another tray 12"X12"X6") What you go with depends on how much surface area you have in your terrerium, and how efficient you need to be with your substrate, as well as how well and how much spawn you can make.
Example where: Tray A 12"X12"X12" Tray B 12"X12"X6" Tray C 12"X12"X6"
Yields: A > B, A > C A < B + C
Tray A will potentially yield more than either tray B or C alone. But, trays B and C together potentially yields more than tray A alone even though the same amount of substrate was used. In this case, if your terrerium was only 12"X12" and you have plenty of substrate, then make tray A. Given the same sized terrerium where the substrate is costly to obtain, just wait and do two different grows like tray B or C. If your terrerium is 24"X12" then you are better off making trays B AND C than you would be if you only made tray A.
Dig it?
