Spore syringe - Distilled/Tap water - Spore germination
    #9161015 - 10/30/08 08:22 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

After quite a few posts of people havng mycelium form in syringes, either from ones they made themself or from vendors, and after i made a syringe and had mycelium appear after a few weeks. I wonder if using tap water or distilled can effect this.

So heres a poll.

I've had this happen twice with tap water, but at the time I was boiling the water for a few minutes first, Not sure if that makes a difference in the water in any way. And probably wasn't necessary with the clean water in my city.

Once it happened rather quickly, maybe less than two weeks (in the fridge), I had wondered if this was normal, maybe it's contamed i should go check it.

Are spores ever germinated and growing from syringes folks buy from vendors??

Tap water is the way to go if it's good in your area. Here's a post from RR about it:

"In addition, the small amounts of chlorine in tap water are not toxic to fungi spores, only bacteria."

Tap water is fine for hydrating substrates and casing layers. I do remember rr recomended that distilled water be kept for spore syringes to those who used it in substrates

My personal theory. Distilled water is hypotonic so the spored don't germinate as easily. Tap water is closer to being isotonic as it contains more ions (salts) so it is easier for them to germinate even in absence of nutrients.

Even, so, because fungi have cell walls they should be able to survive in distilled water, if they do actually germinate.

Does boiled tap water count as distilled or tap water?

No, all boiling does is attempt to kill any live organisms in the water.

Distilled water is pure water, and has nothing dissolved in it, be it organic or inorganic.

though the results are small, there is a slight trend towards tap water. However there are other factors that can cause spore germination in water i believe.

I have read this much somewhere. If you were to take water and sterilize it there are still the bodies of the dead  microbes which mycelium can eat....
