n00b question about the terrarium setup
    #919844 - 09/30/02 04:07 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Im new here, but ive been browsing for about 2 months now, trying to absorb as much info as i could about private cultivation.
finally got around to ordering my syringe from PF, followed every word from the PF TEK, (except i used duck tape instead of tin foil to cover the holes) and im now 11 days into colinization.
everything is looking really good, although the growth seems to be just a little slower than it should because im keeping them at room temp (65-75 F)
but thats all good, because im new, and i enjoy looking closely at this miracle of growth.
the myc is growing very white, thick and theres very pronounced (ryzomorphs?)
around the outer edges of the cloud of the myc looking as if it were reaching out to its 3 counterparts growing on opposide sides of the jar.

anyway...to the question.

im going to use a rubbermaid container with all the usual bells and whistles, temp/humidity gauge, perlite, fanning, spraying, etc when the cakes are rdy.

should i place the cakes directly on the perlite, or should i use "chicken wire" of some sort to sit them on about an inch or so ABOVE the perlite?

are there contam. issues when placing cakes directly on the perlite? (algae?)

and lastly...

to dunk or not to dunk?

any comments/advise would be appreciated.

thanks!

there are people in this world who put them right on the perlite. they also put a little hydrogen peroxide in with the water and perlite.

Use 14/14 '' galvanised hardware cloth (home depot's name for the wire).
over saturation is the only problem with placing your cakes on the perlite.
always cold shock & dunk before ever taking your cakes out of the jars.just remember to remove the layer of vermiculite first .
hope that helps  good luck

"always cold shock & dunk before ever taking your cakes out of the jars"

Before??
Or did you mean as soon as there ready to be taken out of the jars, dunk, and shock?

im familiar with the dunking process, but how should i go about cold shocking?

thanks

As soon as they are ready AND between each flush.
Cold shock while dunking the first time by removeing the verm layer , filling with water , replacing the lid , and putting in the refridgerator for 18-24 hours. Cold shocking will force the cakes to pin .

we used to put our cakes directly on the perlite. but we decided to use a square of tin foil 'cause we started spraying the perlite with water mixed with some bleach. not to mention the perlite used to stick on to the cakes and it was a bit annoying picking it off the mushrooms that would grow on the under side.
dunking is definitely something you should do. there is definitely a difference between a dunked cake vs an undunked cake.
we've had input that the perlite doesn't cause contam. but we just nuke it in the microwave and spray some bleach on it anyways.

OH...ok.
i didnt know i could just fill the jars with water AND put them into the fridge for the night.
i WAS going to take them out, place into a pot filled with water, and use a dinner plate to keep them under, then place in fridge...
i like your way alot better.

thanks for the info everyone, its been a big help..
ill keep everyone informed of my progress.

Girlskater, could you please go into a little more detail concerning the bleach?

specifically, what kind of mixture did you use?
and would i be more prone to problems if i didnt use bleach?

also, now that im thinking about this, how do i go about pasteurising/sterilizing the perlite.
can i just bake it in the oven for X amount of time? maybe the microwave?

thanks

I dont know, I hate doing cakes. You should case. A lot less maintenance, and you can cut all the bells and whistles. I did that route when I first started growing, now Im strictly bulk... straw and grain, much easier. No messes like verm and rice flour. But thats just my opinion. If you put your cake directly on the perlite, then the cake will absorb a lot of water at the contact point. And the little pockets of air between the cake and perlite will provide an excellent home for contams. Even with peroxide in the water, there is still a risk. You can use those plastic things that go on flourescent lights to hold the cake up. Cheap as hell at home depot. You know, its about an inch thick and its all slotted, squared.

Perlite doesn't need to be sterilised but add about a 1\4 cup of peroxide to the water that you wet it with and to your spray bottle also.
And just remember to have fun.

oh, im definitly havin fun, im just a perfectionist, and im off to a good start with 4 jars, no contams on my first try.

um...as for the 1/2 cup of peroxide...how much water to peroxide in the mix?
the reason i ask is beause i dont know if using too much would harm the cakes..

thanks

Say,about a gallon, but use just enough to make the perlite damp(no water standing in terrarium).
