Fruiting question - Multiple strands
    #9203371 - 11/07/08 05:07 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

When fruiting - is it okay to have more then one strand in the same bin? I currently have 4 strands in incubation.

Can you please have a little search before you post and ask these questions, you can not only fruit different Strands:hehehe: in your FC but also different species it don't matter tho if your trying to do azures and cubes I'd say one would suffer

SWIM is colonizing 12 jars, some b+, some z, and hawaiian.
This is SWIM's first grow, and he is planning on fruiting all three in a monotub, he plans on trying a few different trays with different methods. Just to see what works best for SWIM.

I know SWIM is a total newb at this stuff, but he figured that they wouldn't be able to swap trays until done fruiting (spore release), even then the other trays should be cononized and this should not be an issue.

This is all theory as SWIM is still colonizing spawn jars.

Is this a possible senario?

EDIT: Thanks Juke, was typing while you were posting

You really should keep strands of pasta and hair out of the FC:grin:

Different types of mush in the FC will cause mutant mushrooms to form that will probably take you hostage when you sleep because you only want to hurt them in the end and they know this! Be very careful because those Hawaiian penises can get real nasty and jump in your ass or mouth when you sleep!

Thats why I'm warning you mate SWIM said not to mix Hawaiians and Penises in the FC because of reasons stated above. Other than that SWIM and AFOAF'S SWIM said Its ok to fruit different STRAINS together.

Pick it.  It's not going to get any bigger, and it's only going to drop spores and make the place a mess.

I was wondering which is better. to eat the mushie when its still fresh off or when its dried up? is there a difference in the potency? is it better to pick it when the veil is breaking or after it has broken all the way open?

Fresh mushrooms are more potent. And the trip is more intense.

blobs are normal its just a deformed mushroom they are just as good as the actual fruits, you have some pins too I see, your cakes are stressed tho, could be lack of humidity, or you touched em way too much, did you dunk and roll them?

the gts, yes i dunked and rolled but the malabars,no i did not. and yes i can not tell a lie, i have been man handling them(first time farmer so its hard to restrain myself, i will behave). i have been spraying and fanning regularly. fan-4/6 times daily and spraying like 3-4 times daily as well. my RH stays around 80-87 and i cant get it higher than that. got a cool mist humidifier, temps at 76 or so and they r gettin light from a marina aquarium clear light bulb and its 15watts. also u got any ideas on when to pick the "blobs" as u would say?

When the blobs start to slightly go blue you can pic them, they should get much more bigger than that

Stop touching your cakes, every part where you touched the cake will not get pins, your doing everything else perfectly.

Stop touching your cakes, every part where you touched the cake will not get pins, your doing everything else perfectly.

Is your perlite nice and moist? temp is fine I dont use the airstones as IMO they doo nothing at all if your perlite is soaked and drained then it should work perfect

ya i rinsed the shit out of it in a strainer in my sink, let it drain good and dumped it in the bin, etc. i do got holes like 3/16in on the bottom of the bin spread out nicely(its a 105qt bin from wally world), like 16 all together on the bottom. should i have not drilled those there.
i read a post somewhere that if u got 2in of perlite in the bin to fill it about an inch to 1 3/4in wit water but not to the top and that would b adequate enough. what u think on that?

well like ive said b4 to any who has read my post. my temp is currently 76f and my rh is bout 80-90 depending on the day, plus its winter and my house is normally 67f during these mnths, but i got an elc htr in my grow room/spare bedroom so it stays 76 all the time. now i was curious to as if it would b better to raise the general temp in the room itself to like 80-83f or leave it the way it is at 76f,exp advice preffered plz.
mind u i got 2 shotgun bins going wit 5 cks in ea( ones 75qt and the other is 105qt, gonna add more cks in acouple days too ea

If you have sitting water in the fc remove it and drill holes on the bottom also, 76f is perfectly fine.

so when in the fc is it better for the room temp to be like 76f or is it better to keep the room warmer, more like 80-83f

Damion, I think you're off a little.  The 5-8 degree hotter only applies when they're in the substrate jars colonizing, not when they're in the FC.  Well, they SHOULDN'T be in a jar if they're in an FC.  So, they should be *roughly* room temerature (73-78 being the prefered temp, I believe)

Wont the electric heater you are running be drying the air out in your grow room. Maybe thats why your humidity is low in your fc

thought about that and o bought a cool mist humidifier to keep the air moist so im not sure thats the deal.
this is my humidifier. was thinkin of rigging it so that when it kicks on it would blow the air in the fc's. think that would help and keep me from having to spray on a regular basis

Lrn2postedit, and also, he's probably referring to swabbing that blue shit on your cakes with a q tip.  If it's bruising, it won't come off on the q tip, if it's a growth, it'll stain it.

No not really mate but you should be spraying from a distance anyway you only want the fine mist particles going on everything, your not using a hose are you lol

What he said.  Don't spray them directly.  It won't ruin your project but it's not too great for it.  Just spray the perlite and keep the lid on.  It'll be fine.  They're probably bruising because of dryness as opposed to over spraying.

Well, I'm using WBS (half-quart jars) with MS inoculation.

Right now, I have a typical TiT set-up (which will change tomorrow, once the gas is turned on and the room-temperature becomes about 72 degrees).

Any specific details you'd like to know?

at the moment no, im tiered from my "adventure" lastnite  so i cant think all that str8, but could u tell me what ms stands for. also what kind a fc u use. i gotta shotgun tek goin and my cakes r sitting on a layer of moist verm for hydration, im alittle concerned with my rh cause my fruits arent growing that big. room temp 77f,5in perlite, holes on all 6 side of bin- not to close spread out nicely and about 3/16in maybe 1/4in(dont remember) and a cfl. i spray and air out about 3-5 times daily(morning, lunch, and b4 i go to bed). so i dont know what else to do to make these bastrds grow. also i noticed about 4-5 mutants and some abnormal growths. chk them out, what u think...

the bin closest to the wall was set up friday the other one last wk and by the way the two darkest lookin cakes were rolled in dry verm just incase yall wondering whats up there

Well, I'm not the most experienced person to be identifying anomolies (mutations or contams).  We need an experienced cultivator for that.

But, three things I'd recommend.

1) Your temp is in the "okay" zone, but definitely on the highest level of it.  I'd suggest a few degrees lower.  75, probably.

2) 5 inches of perlite?  Might be more than you need.

3) Airing out 3-5 times a day is definitely more than needed.  Most people do it once daily, max.  That could definitely keep your RH down (which could explain your bruising.)

----
About my project, I haven't gotten to the fruiting stage yet (I just inoculated my substrate a little over 3 days ago).  But, I plan on using 2 monotubs.  1 with no casing, one with 50/50 basic.

Oh, and MS = Multi-spore.  (Your basic spore syringe ordered from a sponsor.  NOT isolated)

That thing is crazy looking lol..  Usually if everything is within spec the temp, humidity and everything then the mutation is most likely genetic..

I never give opinions on something I haven't *specifically* read up on.  That's why I said "might be," just because I've read some posts where people use a little less.  You could be right, though.  ^_^

Like I said, I haven't read up on it, so I won't give you any suggestions.  Once I'm near my fruiting step and read up a little more on things like that, I'll be happy to share some ideas.  :-)

Well, I started reading up and made one attempt around my registration date, which would be... a little over 3 years ago.

I did it once then, didn't follow ANY sterilization rules.  An extremely sad result of losing... 8 of 12 half-pint BRF cakes to contam.  First "flush" was just a few grams, because I decided to use whole grain brown rice, instead of searching out for the flour.

Since then, I've read up a little more, and about 4 months ago I came back.  Have read religiously through all suggestions and am making my first *serious* attempt, basing all my decisions, choices and opinions on the results of experiences and successful cultivators (such as Shroomy1 and RR), and the most highly recommended Teks (i.e., Doc's WBS Tek).

So, you could say I'm kinda like a college student:  I know what I know not through "experience," but "devoted study" of those who came before me.

So, you could say I'm kinda like a college student:  I know what I know not through "experience," but "devoted study" of those who came before me.

well thats basically how im doin it. i read alot  b4 i started and im doin as i learn, so u could say its like trial and error for me. soon enough ill have my "Masters".

Well...  If you have to ask that many questions, I wouldn't say you were quite close to your masters.  I wouldn't even say an associates degree is quite in sight yet.

ok so these r amazons growing short and fat, really fat but dont seem to b extending outward at all. any idea as to why these r growing like this. Also take notice on how the top of the cap on one of them is breakin open on the cap instead of were the veil is, any ideas as to why this is happening their?

these 2 bottom ones r the same fat ass pin, just 4 the record...

some fat little bastards arent they.
all my settings are fine and standing(rh,temp,fae,spraying,light-8/10hrs on off). not sure whats up whith these but they dont wanna grow up  :emocry:  :hissyfit:

If you humidity and temp are good than most likely it is genetics.. I had a flush of KSS that were short fatties then on the second flush they got taller..  But never the less cakes usually produce smaller shrooms anyways..

I would say more FAE.  But that's only what I was recommended when mine were doing the exact same thing.  Also, Nice avatar, Damion.  It excites me.

so the fuckers retarded/handicapped then. so how long should i let it grow b4 picking it woukd u say, i mean since its a mutant i would say, is it still gonna pop a veil or just keep an eye on it as always and pick when needed

Well just cause it's short and fat doesn't mean that it's a mutant..  And good point on FAE, make sure it get's enough about every 4 hours..  I usually just wait till about 50% of the veil has broken away then I pick them, before they tear off the rest of the way and drop spores..

Side Note:  I hear that all the time about my avatar

ok well here is some more pics of my 2 fat asses, like 24 hrs apart give or take a few hrs. take a good look at the one that was splitting on the cap. if u look inside u can see the veil and it appears to still b growing. is this gonna b a good magic one or is this one a lost cause, never seen one like this so im not sure on it. also like i said the one splitting is a eq, do these normally get this fat when growing on bfr cks or is it a corky special?

if u ask me the one that is cracked open looks like its smileing.. little shop of horrors" feed me seamore" or even better that damn flower that is always trying to eat u in mario. but i say he just happy  and wants to smile for the camera

also i removed the cups of water with the air stones in them cause i felt they were the reason my rh wasnt staying stable enough for them. when i did so i noticed a dramatic change in growth and rh levels...I felt the air moving around in there was pushing the rh out the holes and drying my perlite a little 2 much(using a shot gun tek) and never got a chance to build up and stay moist.
my opinonion anyone who has something on that order take it out for a day or 2 and c what happens growth should pick up and the rh should level out to ur 100-95% range.
Im not a experienced grower but it worked for me so far so u never know, it mite just work 4.

The ones i got were dunked for 24hr and then placed in the bin on friday night(12/5), wit a layer of dry verm on top of the ck and sprayed it well enough that u could c the verm was wet and let it be and thats what i got
Also how long did that bad boy grow for b4 u plucked that fatty?

I am not sure if that is from casing alone.. Size usually has to do with the available nutrients..

Here you go noobie.. The trays I was asking about in the other thread are done..

I took 1/3 brick of coir added 1/2 pint of coffee 1/2 pint of verm and 2.5 quarts of water.. Pastureized it all and put it into a tray with 1 quart of GT spawn.. Closed it up and now all I have to do is wait..

that looks good i see a lot of spawn there
i wasnt tryin to bash you
i have done trays with clear tubs too
i have found that most of the pins that grow on the sides mature
and produce fruits
on another note, the BIG ASS shrooms i grew were fronm a clone
i grew a peice of tissue out on agar, took the best rizos and transfered it to another dish
i did that 3-4 times then put a nice sized peice of that
in to a quart jar

I plan to do the same thing with agar once I get an extra 20 bucks to go buy a sterile tub for a glovebox.. Sometime this weekend hopefully I already have the agar and dishes.. Just need a clean environment to pour them..

Id run a strip of tap around where the lid meets the tub. those tubs always have a huge gap around the seal. Just for safety measures (Contams), and to trap in RH, plus so it doesn't dry out your sub.

Terence McKenna Said:
"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."

LoL thanks noobie.. Umm I was thinking about doing it boris but RR posted saying I don't even have to put holes in the top because the gap in the lid would let GE take place but the holes were already made.. So what should I do..

aight my fellow asian hunters, whats ur opinions  on wbs and rye grain? which is better to use for casings, i tend to think that wbs would provide more nutrients than rye just cause theres different seeds wit different nutrients as for rye is just one or am i way off?

Both good but from what I have been reading and understand Rye is easier to judge the moisture content because the seeds are for uniform.. Where as in WBS the seeds vary in size and shape.. IMO of course..

Aren't casing supposed to be non-nutritious?  And in that case wouldn't verm/coir work well?

Coir is nutritious and casing are not suppose to be soo therefore coir/verm = nutrition..

Less nutritious than wbs or rye.  Semi nutritious is fine but if it's just rye or wbs then that sounds like spawning to bulk substrate.

ok, well i got sum of that crushed oyster shells(2 boxes), some miracle grow moisture control with aqua coir, and a brick of coconut fiber bedding. how would i go about the measurements  for these ingredients and should i still use verm in the mixture for a bottom layer?

Use the 50/50 tek but if you are casing the grain jars and not spawning them to bulk replace the peat moss in the 50/50 tek with coir..  So you would have 50/50 coir/verm instead of peat/verm  It will provide some more nutrients..

Yeah you can use the same 50/50 tek with grain jars just substitute the coir instead of moss and you will get some nutritional value..

well now i lost. so i dont need allthat shit i got then?
what i wanna do is  inoc some rye/wbs and let it do its thing and then  use that for producing mushies. im not tryin to do bulk yet. just wanna get a mono going and i thought u had to case it?  so then theres no need to case just lay out and et it grom, no need for that layer of sub on top.... am i makin sense to any of u cause i dont make sense to myself. ive done alot of reading but it seems like when one person says too do this another says not to.

No idea.. If you want to go bulk you need to spawn your grain jars to coir/poo/straw..  If you have grain jars but dont want to go bulk you put them in  a small tray and case/cover them with 50/50 coir/verm..

ya no bulk yet im not that good yet. lemme get this all down to a T and then we'll do some serious damage.
Should i still mix in some of those crushed oyster shells? i read that its a plus to add that to the 50/50 tek so it gives the mushies a better foothold on the substrate and doesnt leave holes in it when u pick them off and plus it just gives some added nutri's

Question about this:

      50/50 (Plus) Casing Tek

Adding 4% agricultural hydrated lime and 15% crushed oyster shell, by volume, to the over all 50/50 mix is a much better casing soil. The soil seems to give the mushrooms more support so when your harvesting your not digging out deep chunks of mycelium from the substrate, instead they pull out very easily from the surface. The mushrooms also seem to grow much bigger this way being they have a stronger base into the mycelium network. They also like the lime and calcium from the oyster shell, and you will see less contamination in the casing soil with the lime added. When mixing the casing substrate, a lot of the oyster shell and lime sinks to the bottom, so mix it and squeeze it real good when placing over the substrate...

Does anyone know if it would matter if i didnt add the hydrated lime to this mixture and left it as the 50/50 with just the crshed oyster shells. woild this hinder the mix/growth or it should just work the same

Seems to work good.. I need to start using it with grains. I currerntly just use it in bulk, but from what I am told you can use like 25% coffee water with regular water when soaking your grains for 24 hours and it helps speed up the colonization time..

I dunno, reading through this whole post... makes my head hurt... newpala21 doesn't seem to know wtf's goin on. ...or something. I read something about grain as a casing, I think... high nutrient bulk substrates being used as a casing... IT'S ALL MADNESS !

Its like, for one second newpala21 talks with high confidence, as if hes some cultivating master know it all(I think hes copy/pasing info from other peoples posts). Then other times he has 0 confidence in his decisions, and wants every one else to tell em what to do... (Noobie) I dunno, making me bonkers reading this post

And I draw the line at casings and additives.. I don't know what makes a good casing and I don't know shit about gypsum or oyster shells.. All i know is coffee/coir/verm

Cubes don't need a casing. I sorta use one... if you wanna call it that. I just sprinkle over a VERY thin and airy lair of verm straight out of the bag, then mist it with my spray bottle to hydrate it a lil, then pop it in my Martha. My casing style is exactly what the definition of a casing is supposed to be. A moisture reservoir, and a micro-climate. I don't understand why most people have some mind boggling scientific recipe for a casing, and cake the shit on a 1/2 - an inch deep... :what: Its really uncalled for. THE SUB SURFACE NEEDS FAE ! how is it gunna get FAE if there's a casing an inch thick smothering it ? The more FAE it gets while in the knotting/ pinning stage, the better the pinset is going to be. Check mine out:

If you can get a good look at the casing, notice you can still see the colonized sub (White). some of those were the second flush, and pinset wasn't as good as the first.

Yea, 'cause there's no need to colonize further.

When It hits 100% colonized, I sprinkle on the verm, mist/hydrate the verm, and throw it in my Martha (Fruiting conditions). Then like 5 days later, pin-fest.

And I would never put anything more then just straight verm. IMO ofcorse, (Not trying to be cocky) but my results sorta speak for them selves.
