The Telepathy Challenge (updated with results)
    #9202708 -

Moderators, I cross-posted this in P&S and M&P to attract not only skeptics but also believers.  If this isn't kosher, feel free to move this where ever.

So prompted by several recent threads on the existence/non-existence of telepathy, I decided to revive the Swami challenge of yesteryear and update it with a methodology more appropriate to dealing with belief-based phenomena.

The challenge is this, sweet and simple:  I have thought of a single English word, and I have PMed the word of my choice to an unbiased referee (Veritas) to ensure that I won't simply deny that a guess was correct by changing it retroactively.  Anyone who can successfully predict what word I am thinking by posting their correct prediction in this thread will have won the challenge.  I'll give all takers until Friday, November the 14th to submit their guesses before the Challenge ends.

Details: The word I am thinking of is an English word, and can be found in a dictionary.  If your telepathic means requires personal contact, that's too bad... by its very nature something online on a forum such as this will have to demonstrate telepathy across thousands of miles and without even having met me.  (But, at least personally speaking, I'd be be willing to bet that for any telepathist worth his salt, distance should not matter so long as you have a link to some identifying feature of the person in question; in this case my online handle of Cypher should suffice.)  For anyone interested, however, I will say that I am male--narrowing down the field of possibilities to slightly more than 50%.  To submit your prediction, simply post the word you chose in this thread and on Friday the 14th I will unveil the chosen word and which (if any) predictions were correct.

In addition, I make no claims to be a skeptic when it comes to telepathy--I have experienced many convincing telepathic episodes while under the influence of psychoactive drugs, each of which I was able to empirically test--so you will find no mysterious Skeptic Ray emanating from this callous, close-minded cranium.  My mind is open and waiting for anybody worth his word to pluck out my thought--during the week of the Challenge, I will be attempting to be receptive and will be opening my mind quite frequently with the use of various psychoactive drugs and meditative techniques.

Reward: nothing whatsoever.  Anyone who can successfully demonstrate telepathic powers of this nature has a very real reason not to want to be publicized; if any powerful regimes (read: conspiracy theories a la Illuminati) were actually in existence, any hint of true powers or abilities beyond the capabilities of the average brainwashed sheeple would be grounds for being silenced--not to mention the government's potential interest in any such persons and subsequent restriction of their personal freedoms in the interest of being protected "for the public's safety" and for further Department of Defense research.  The offer of money only draws charlatans and tricksters intent on deceiving the experimenter and claiming the cash; a person who's truly capable of telepathy would probably even have no need of money (why bother getting a job when you can read people's bank account numbers or see what poker hand the other guy has, for example.)

Do you have what it takes?

------------------------------

H'okay, so the deadline's up for the contest and not a single person successfully guessed the word or the object.

The word was: fortuitous
and the object was: a Cross.

The only reports of telepathy I have heard (that are somewhat believable anyway) are instances where personal contact has huge influence, to the point where part of the psyche is cross-imprinted. That would be much more interesting to test. Don't know how you could though. For example, my friend told me how very early one morning in the midst of sleep she heard her mother scream (although they were several miles away from each other). She immediately called and asked if everything was okay; the crazy thing is the mother had exactly the same experience and was about to dial her daughter. Freak occurrence, or what? Things like this have happened to them a couple times. But how in the world would you test this empirically?

Re: The Telepathy Challenge [Re: Epigallo]
    #9205377 -

A very basic starting point might be to have each party jot down in a diary the potentially telepathic thought transmission/reception and the time it crossed the mind (or voice-record it, if quickness helps) separately, checking emails/calls/etc. to ensure that no other communication was made. If the phenomenon seems valid with such tests we can get more intensive.

and getting "more intensive" would involve..?

Re: The Telepathy Challenge [Re: Epigallo]

Maybe insisting it be done in laboratories, at certain distances (five miles, hundreds of miles, thousands), requesting specific data be telepathically transmitted, getting as much detail about each communicator's vision/perception as possible, trying with people who don't know each other and have never met, and so on...

At the same time an intensive study of all factors concomitant with the telepathic experience - other behaviors (including possible cues), degree of prior relationship/intimacy, degree of each person's knowledge of other people in general - would help to better explain or rule out other likely factors, and hopefully the technology for much more detailed brain-scanning gets developed to get a better sense of what goes through the mind and how/when/why.

Nice bit of data mining. Now include the 10 million phone calls where worry-warts called a friend or relative and nothing was wrong and what do you have?

I know for a fact that they are not such "worry-warts" they call each other for no reason other to make sure everything is okay, before waking hours, and imagining each other screaming at that. And for the same 2 people to have repeat experiences?

I think you forgot my original post. :foreheadslap:

My whole point was: how do you test experiences that seem telepathic if they only happen spontaneously between people that know each other?

OK, remove the part "trying with people who don't know each other have never met," and I think everything else would still apply. They can experience spontaneous telepathy and, instead of calling each other, note the experience separately for a test.

Re: The Telepathy Challenge [Re: OrgoneConclusion]

This isn't telepathy, this is more like predicting the future like someone else hinted.

Telepathy IS possible and manifest in the world. There are some requirements. For example, you wouldn't be able to telepathically communicate with an abstract like 'the name of a member on an online forum'. The mind would have to be present in your mind. This, I guess, would work something like quantum mechanics - it's there if you know it's there, otherwise its not. So that would answer the question as to 'range'. You have to know exactly who the receiver is and exactly what you're doing.

It's no surprise. There is a perfect parallel to this which is sort of the framework called intuition. You can intuit the minds of others, intuitively communicate. We're all one mind.

yes to all three.

if two people don't know each other at all and both hear screams in the night at the same time, that is a coincidence. but if each hears the other person scream, can you dismiss that other person as not being a possible cause? Of course not. If there is a common cause or trigger for two things it isn't a coincidence. It isn't telepathy in the traditional sense, but it's a strange psychological happening and I notice it quite often.

Re: The Telepathy Challenge [Re: Gomp]

methodology is bad. look at how long your post is cypher, you could have subconsciously inserted the cues or counter cues into your text.

being over the internet shouldn't effect telepathy at all.

for it to be telepathy you'd have to be giving off a signal for people to read.  in this case it would be thinking about the word you've chosen.  ideally you'd have at least one 15 minute scheduled period a day where you concentrate on the word so people have something to tune into.

non-vocal language is very hard to pick up unless the person is broadcasting very loudly.  if you wanted to make the test reasonable, you should probably have a visual to broadcast also. sub-vocalizations work better than non-vocal.
the best form of sending is what i guess you'd call a gestalt though.  gestalts work best with things that can be sensed with the normal 5 senses.  for instance "inhospitable" would be pretty hard concept to send, because your personal experience and biases are going to encode the broadcast with things other people wouldn't associate with inhospitable.
something like "chair" has a much more stable conceptual meaning, plus you can send sense information (pictures).

when broadcasting its important to maintain your focus and your signal strength.  people have multiple layers of thoughts running through their head at the same time, and these thoughts flow chaotically.  if you're thinking "loud" enough you still have to make sure the word you've chosen is the strongest thought being sent.
its better to send for very short periods of time with good focus, than randomly thinking about the word throughout the day and having people try and pick it up from your subconscious.  with the chair example, if you're focusing on sending chair and your mind wanders for a second and you wonder to yourself "is a couch a chair?" people that can't decode the chair may be able to decode the couch, and thats what they'll pick up even though that thought was less than a second.

i keep using the word decode, because people have different associations with things, it can take some work to strip away the personal content and find the universal meaning.

edit: i forgot to mention, opening your mind with psycho active drugs would probably have a negative effect on people's ability to read your mind for multiple reasons.  there is a slight chance that given this is the shroomery the negative effect wouldn't be as large as normal though.

OK, how does 10:00 pm - 10:05 pm Mountain time every day work for people?  I'll concentrate as hard as I can on the target word during this interval, and I've also decided to think of a particular object that I'll concentrate on during the same time.  (The identity of the object has been also PMed to Veritas.)

No psychoactive drugs will be ingested during this specific time interval, but just offhand I would predict the use of cannabis and meditation the rest of this week would help open my mind for telepathic receptiveness... thoughts?

Not necessarily on command, but it would have to be in settings that could be completely monitored to account for any extraneous factors - full surveillance could replace coming to the white-walled, coated-clipboard-toting-scientist-manned "Laboratory."
