Mysterious Root Muncher!

In another installment of 'What the heck is this?' I give you... the dirty zebra striped innards tree root munching fungus! I found these things growing on the dead roots of a chinese tallow tree stump.

Some of the detail is hard to make out with my lousy phone camera. At first I thought it might be some kind of sclerotia, but each of these things is very light and dry. Pulling one from the roots reveals papery layers of tissue with radial bands of black and white.
Habitat: Wood, found growing on the roots of a chinese tallow tree stump that's been dead for at least two years.
Gills: None, no pore surface evident.
Stem: None.
Cap: Thin, dry and papery.
Spore print: Didn't have a chance to take one yet.
Bruising/Staining: Not evident.
Location: USA, Texas Gulf Coast region.

Yeah, its common name is King Alfred's cake. Apparently, it's brilliant tinder for catching low-temperature sparks. There's a Ray Mears video somewhere on Youtube where he uses this species to light a fire, transferring a flint-struck spark to it. I'd love to find me some.

Hey, that's pretty cool! I'll have to try lighting some on fire with a magnifying glass or one of those spark throwing gas stove lighter things. This stump is in my back yard and I plan on digging it up soon. Since this species doesn't consume much cellulose, I may be able to re-use some of the root stock to grow reishi, or just inoculate the heck out of the stump.

Which Ray Mears video?? I've never seen Ray use that (at least that I can remember). I have every video he's ever done. Ray Mears is the best!
I've only seen him use: Inonotus obliquus Fomes fomentarius Fomes igniarius Phellinus tremulae Phellinus igniarius
And I think two of the listed species are the same, just different names.

Here ya go, just at around 3 mins into the clip he introduces the fungus.
The magnifying glass will definitely work a treat with this fungus provided it's really cracker dry
