Returning a PS3 to Walmart?

So I've got a 40GB PS3 that's messed up. It functions, turns on, etc, but if I play a game for like 1.5 hours, or if I'm running Life with Playstation (what they renamed Folding@Home and added news stories), the controllers will not be able to sync up at all either wirelessly or if I have it connected to the USB, and I am forced to hit the power switch on the back. Then after flipping that back to on, I have to press the button on teh PS3 to get it to come on (cannot turn it on with Controller) I always check the battery on the controllers after this happens and it's never been because of a low battery.
So now I want to try to return it to Wally World and get a new one that works. I don't have a receipt as it was a gift last Christmas. I still have the original box, but not the cardboard/styorfoam packaging, and the box has writing on it from my recent move (damn movers)
Any advice on how I can do this the best way without raising any flags? I just want a PS3 that's not gonna freeze up in the middle of bustin a cap in some street hoes (GTA IV) or while I'm trying to help save the world with protein folding (Folding@Home).

the time is what I was afraid of. The 40GB's were just cut out of the picture recently (started phasing out in like late august), so I may be able to say I got it kind of more recently than last christmas.
Walmart's Return policay says: Damaged or Defective Items If an item you receive is damaged or defective you can return the item to a Wal-Mart store or return it by mail for a full refund. If returning the item via mail, please follow the procedures listed in Return an Item by Mail, choose the appropriate return reason code from the dropdown and choose the option of refund or replacement.
So I would think, being that the PS3 doesn't function as it is supposed to, it is defective. And they don't list a time frame on there...?

I've looked around teh interwebs and it seems to be a common problem with the 40gb models.
