Simplest Mini-Monotub Project - a multitude of stories (UPDATED 11/15/08)

I had 12 half pint grain jars: 4 Lipa, 4 Texan, and 4 Huantla.
And 4 quart grain jars: 2 Texan and 2 Lipa.
Originally, I had ordered a texan syringe, a Lipa syringe, and an Orissa syringe. Without notice, Sporelab sent me a Huantla instead of the Orissa (!?)...I think they had run out. But anyways, needless to say, NONE of the Lipa ever colonized, I even tried an LC and that proved a waste of time also. Lesson learned. Next time I'm using Ralphster's.
Most of the jars had stalled due to low temperatures, and obviously, the Lipa's never did anything whatsoever (so there goes 2 quarts and 4 half pints). Due to the increased colonization times, some contaminated, so I threw those out. I was left with a fully colonized Texan Quart, 3 50-75% colonized Texans, and 2 50-75% colonized Huantlas.
For the half pints I went on with my original plan of making jars of Mycelium Water. I knocked up some grain jars a week later to test and all jars are colonizing well.
As for the the Quart jar, I decided to try a couple things that had tweaked my interest. First, I wanted to try a Mini-Monotub because of my cramped space. Second, I wanted to try an LED Lighting setup because it looked neat. Third, I didn't want to bulk up my substrate, so straight grain cased with RR's 50/50 casing and pasturization Tek.
So I went ahead and got a 26 liter Rubbermaid bin and drilled six 2 inch holes. I added 2 quarts of pasturized 50/50 on the bottom, then applied the quart of colonized grain, and covered it with 2 more quarts of 50/50. I filled the holes with polyfil, and placed the cover on the bin duct- taping all the sides. The lid I had prepared had Blue LED Christmas lights taped to the inside of the lid. Nothing fancy. Here's what it looked like.
Here you can see the small layer of grain in the middle.
Here's what the actual tub looked like.
So, essentially I put the tub into fruiting conditions right away, there was FAE and light while the casing colonized. This was another part of my experiment as I had let my last monotub colonize without fruiting conditions.
The tub began colonizing quickly. Within a week the tub looked like this.
A couple days later, it looked like this.
After ten days without pinning, I started to worry. There was heavy rhizomorphic action in the tub and some knotting, but no pins. The pinning triggers were all there: humidity was 99%, FEA was there, misting was being done 2-3 times per day. I let it go another day or two and narrowed the problem down to lighting. So I went to the pet store and to my dismay the only bulb they didn't have was the size that I needed. However, there was a 6500K Hagen CFL on the shelf. Of course I said "don't say why, say why not!".
Within 36 hours of installing the new bulb I found my first pin. I'll spare you the picture because my Pocket PC took a blurry pic.
Two more days passed and pins were appearing in droves. The following pics are from the past 4 days.
These are from tonight.
Now just so you know how little space I'm working with...
Notice that the FEA is produced by a fan sitting on the floor. I leave it on low facing indirectly from the tub. There's an incubator in the back.
Now, I'm curious to see what this is going to yield, but things are looking much better than they did. A few things I took from this:
1) I didn't have to bulk my substrate. 2) I introduced fruiting conditions directly after casing without any major issues. 3) I analyzed my pinning triggers to narrow down the cause of my pinning problem. 4) In follow up of the above statement, the right light spectrum proved to be important. 5) SMALL & SIMPLE WORKS! 6) Don't order from Sporelab. Use a sponsor, i.e., Ralphsters.
Anyways, my next project, I plan on bulking to a mix I've contemplated and doing a big monotub. But this little one should give me a little party at Christmas time
Cheers to the Shroomery!
Update 11/9/08
Well, I harvested the first flush Saturday. Half Ounce dry. Not to bad considering the size. Pardon the blurry pic. I'm working on getting a new camera.
Me and the girlfriend had some last night. Best sex Eva!
Cheers!
Update 11/15/08
Well, the second flush was probably done yesterday but I was out of town, so it made quite a mess, but hey, shrooms are shrooms hehe
Fewer shrooms, but all of them much bigger on average.
Another half ounce dry!
Gonna munch out tonight I think hehe
Cheers!

If your going to use LED lights use white leds. Its not the colour of the light thats important. Its the colour temperature.
Sometimes pinning takes longer. ]
Make sure that light isnt heating your terrarium up, halogens produce alot of heat.

Good to know, thanks.
The CFL seems to be doing OK for heat considering that that closet is a little colder. Although I'm watching it very closely. Good observation!

Sorry, that's what I meant. You bulked your spawn to straw and/or hpoo. I only cased straight rye grain on this one. Next tubs are gonna get bulked to straw/coir/coffee/verm, and then cased to 50/50+
Again, I freakin love that clumper pic hehe

I hate to bring up such an old thread, but I feel this is highly relevant. I have 2 major grows under my belt as of now, and I got ALL of my spores from Captain Max @ Sporelab.com and out of the 4 different strains I got from him, 2 of them were the same as you got (the Lipa Yai and the Texan) and I had EXACTLY the opposite issue. That's CRAZY!!! The Lipa was my fastest, and best colonizer, with Ecuador right behind em, but the Texans failed MISERABLY!!!
I had more TX jars than any other strain (6 I believe) and I lost EVERY SINGLE JAR to contams, And I honestly think that the reason was the same as the OP stated, which is because the jars were colonizing SOOO SLOOOOOW that they took too long and contamed. maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't lose ANY Lipa jars, and only lost 1 EQ jar. SO that shit's crazy. I was VERY happy with the LY. I got the biggest flushes from my LY cakes, and my biggest flushing bulk try was an LY. So I don't know what's up with that. maybe the spores he sent just weren't viable, and mine happened to be TX, and yours happened to be LY...???
But The Captain replaced my TX syringe with a B+, which I've already used and harvest 8.5 oz's dry last week So he has some good spores, it's just that, sometimes, shit happens. he took care of me tho. he also did me another fave that NO other spore vendor will do. I'll let you guess what that is. Here's a clue... it's the ONLY thing they say they wont do. Usually at the bottom in fine print, or in bold on the enter page...

That's why you don't go blaming the supplier first thing. I'm not even 1 grow experienced yet and I still know that the first thing you should look at is the sterilization/inoc process. Hell, not brushing your teeth could have led to a juicy-brown sausage-smelling jar...it's disgusting and easy to facilitate if you're moving the whole project just a bit too fast. Slow and steady wins the race.
