Potency of dried poppy pods.
    #919592 - 09/30/02 04:19 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

How potent are dried poppy pods (like the ones you buy at the flower stores) compaired to fresh home grown ones?

Actually, it's very easy to isolate a super producing sclerotia strain.

Follow the strain isolation technique on Let's Grow Mushrooms, and then select sectors early which are brown in color.  By the second or third transfer, you'll see stones developing, and this is only about 1 month after the original swipe of spores on agar.

Now, take each stone and move it to a new dish.  Soon, the mycelium will grow out and you'll see fresh stones developing, and if they're good strains, the sclerotia is forming long before the mycelium reaches the edge of the plate.  Pick strains which form four or five stones within two weeks and use these for your grain masters.

I guessed that, but was expecting a more intelegent answer, especially from the likes of you.

To make the question simpler, let's suppose for a moment that we are talking about the same strain, and conditions. The pods sold for decorative purposes, I would guess, are ripe. right? how much would that affect it, and how much would be lost during drying?

Is that a berrer question?

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

I was watching the History Channel today and say a picture of baby Hitler. It made me think of you.
