Sealing spawn bags with an iron?
    #919286 -

someone recently referred to doing this-ironing them through a piece of paper-but I don't know if they had actually tried it.Since those things are pretty pricey,I thought I'd check if anyone had done it.If I get no response, then I'll try it anyway i guess...

Never tried it. There's some major mechanical differences between an iron and an impulse sealer, though. Not quite sure how you'll make a good reliable bond with out making a squishy mess of the bag

I guess one approach would be to use the iron almost on it's side, and use the edge to slice across the bag.

Just my 2 cents

Should work fine....I run sealing machines for a living....and have done some pretty weird things to get bags sealed!!! GOFORIT!!!!!!
If that does not work, try the even easier method-DUCTAPE or boxtape!! Works fine.
Best of luck....

Yeah, an iron should work good. You might have to experiment a bit with a good heat setting though.
I have also used a hot knife, and hot pliers. Just use your imagination! And try it out first on spare bags.

My first batch ended up sticking to the sides of the pressure cooker.Easy to peel of the plastic residue, but the bags were of course useless...

I have used an iron with success many times, i fold the bag over itself about 3 times, in about half inch segments, then i iron over it quickly on high, until the middle seals itself together, you'll know when it's solid. I actually have even sealed spawn bags with a lighter, just melting it then pressing it together, sealing them that way before PC'ing. Worked fine. Did my last 2 batches that way, before I bought a new iron (i moved).

It worked for me. I just laid it out flat and pressed with a pretty hot iron for just a second along the length of the opening and it sealed perfectly. It might take a little practice but it will seal it solid.
