I would say that mental pain stems from sin. Denial of simple logic and facts of reality are an attempt of the individual to rationalize his sin, to hide from it.

christianity = farce (for many reasons which would require their own thread)
being a christian = denial of simple logic and facts of reality
quoting the bible to support an argument = sin
