you'll want to look into Panaeolus subbalteatus. you can find much information about that species in the finding mushrooms section of the shroomery faq.

Grew up in the central valley and all you need to do is check out newly laid lawns they are usually peppered with Pan. Subb. and fall is a great time to check. What they lack in potency they make up in quantity and of course the bay area is where the potent woodlovers live.

your most likely to find Gymnopilus Luteofolius, though there is quite a range of Gymnopilus that grow in the central valley
also, if theres any horse stables in town, check in back where they pile the poop from all the horses mixed with hay - for Panaeolus Subbalteatus.
anyway, good luck out there.

I've spent some time shrooming in the san joaquin and all I've ever found were subbs. I would recommend taking a trip to the bay area as has been mentioned, or check out your local state park. Once you find a nice reliable patch that you could see yourself visiting again in the future, make sure to snip the mushies with some clippers rather than pull them straight out of the ground; the latter will usually tear out some of the mycelium and make that patch potentially less fruitful in the future.
Also I would recommend eating them fresh since they lose a bit of potency dried. I've made that mistake plenty of times in my early days, when I thought drying my shrooms would make them more potent. If the taste and/or bugs is/are unbearable, just make a tea out of them. The mushroom tea will also taste a little better if you add a bit of loose mint tea in with it, or whatever else suits your fancy.
Good luck, and happy hunting!

I am in the central valley as well. I haven't seen more than a handful of subbs since the weather turned cool. There are some Gyms out there though. Be careful hunting gyms though. You will need to be able to distinguish them from deadly species that share the same habitat as Gyms and have similar characteristics. NEVER consume a mushroom that you are not 100% sure of.

check out this thread by alan. it illustrates some of the more common mushroom fruiting in the bay area this time of year.
for actives, you should read all you can on Psilocybe cyanescens, the new species going under the name 'cyanocriscosa', or 'friscosa'.

I'm about 45 minutes up the hill from Sac and they are really starting to fruit around here in the last two days. Pins everywhere. Found a few on a lawn on my property, start looking around closer...dozens and dozens coming in.

going to the bay this weekend any ideas would be great. i really need to find some actives for two reasons....1 being i really need a spore print from a decent strain as i live in ca and 2 to eat them......any info would be graet are the cyans pretty common urban/disturbed??? cow fields or twigs and leaves in the forested areas you know from expierence as i only know what ive read which is pretty contradictory and of a broad spectrum, any help and/or info would be great

Ew Fresno... Modesto here. Also ew. Just hit the big parks in the city and be patient. Take your time and look under/near/around logs and wood chips. Although, I have found most my cyans hiding amongst tall grass in the transitional/restoration areas. Carry a stick for those hard to get places. I went out to the bay twice last week and didn't find any actives but from the looks of bay thread it would be worth another trip soon.

Yeah, I dunno if SF hit record temps, but they said a few days ago it was possible.
I think the issue is that we simply have not had enough rain in CA. It was a exceptionally dry spring/summer and so far fall. We recently just had our first real rain in 7-8 months here in the foothills around Halloween.
