The koh samui experiment

About 4 weeks ago a little idea conjured in my head to experiment a little to learn more about the hardiness and resistance of cubensis.
I had months old straw still a little green but dry enough to burn instantly. I boiled for 3 hours and drained. Then stuck in a pillow case filled with 25% coffee 50% straw. I boiled for 90 minutes and let drain for an hour. I then added 25% verm. I stuck in jars and steamed like BRF. I inoculated 1cc multi spore in half pints. I threw most of the jars out because nothing happened but I kept 4. Well 1 is almost fully colonized with a very fragrant fungi smell mmm delicious.
So know I have the task of figuring out was to do with it. Should I spawn to coir straw and verm? should I just stick in the fc how it is?

Theres no point in using trying to sterilised contaminated substrates since the contamination will have eating alot of the food that would have been benificial to mycelium.
I wouldnt do anything with it other than fruit it as a cake on its own. If you must spawn to at a low ratio with a bulk sub mixed in whatever proportions you see fit.,

Alright thanks. The mycelium is really strong with weird long root like rhizo the roots spread from one side of the jar to the next and I assume that this is good suggesting it is healthy and strong
here are some pics over time

yeah i would spawn it to a little bit of bulk. i think it has those long rhizos because its looking for food. i could be wrong though so....

So with this said, This experiment I experienced a 90% failure rate when using straw as a substrate and injecting multispore. It has taken nearly a month and a half for this cake to look like this. In my honest opinion, if the coffee grounds were not in the jar I do not believe this one would have been a success. As you can see in my previous picture I have some nice rhizome action happening. The center where it spawned was a coffee ground. I do not expect any fruiting though because of the amount of energy the mycelium took to colonize the straw/verm/coffee mix.
In the future I will do the same thing again but using an LC and more coffee

If I dunk it, it will fall apart. I used straw as a substrate and it is quite weak at the bottom. The network connection is not as strong. I did cold shock the cake though

really?.... really that will fall apart? i dunk grain substrates i figure that is less stable then straw. it looks nice and strong. edit- why in gods name would you have cold shocked?

I cold shocked it to gt it ready to fruit if it does at all. Because it was in the incubator for so long I figured Id wake up those cells. I placed the mini fruiting chamber outside for one night. It worked quite well, the following 24 hours I noticed more cell expansion than division. Little round white bulbs popped up on the bottom edge of the cake although I do not think it is pins yet. Like the title says it is an experiment so the procedures it took were and are abnormal. I do have to say this is a good strain at resisting contams early in the colonization process I did see some motabolites in the jar

I have that going too although its brazilian im doing for pf tek right now due to the speed of colonization I need atm.

o ok. experimenting is fun.
i like brazilian strain spawned to a little bulk. its amazing what one cake can do when spawned to bulk.

cold shocking is obsolete for cubensis. i still think that thing can be dunked. that would be the most beneficial for it.

I Kind of like the root like rhizo's it really shows the strains determination to continue cell division
Here are some pins
The pictures are kind of blurry due to the various depths of what I am taking a picture of.
The bottom pic has a nice pin but its quite blurry and unless you can make it out you wont see it.

Its quite small. I think its due to lack of nutrition. Im just going to pick and dry along with the rest of the aborts. I got another syringe coming of this strain which I like so i'm going to do mono tubs with it then I will print expect giveaways in the future.

To conclude this I got 2 mushrooms off of it and they were very potent even for a thai strain. I ate them raw and had a fun morning.
here's the last shot
