Super thin split stems that smell like chocolate
    #918844 - 09/30/02 07:47 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

My friend (who will remain nameless) was growing some mushrooms indoors on Scotts 3-n-1. They flushed marvelously, but the fruit bodies were a bit deformed (not enough headroom in the growing container)
So they bent over when they reached the top of his containter.. but.. the stems, which were light and airy and very thin walled split open at the bend on a bunch of em, but they just kept growing.

Also another weird thing... his mushrooms smell like chocolate. I've never encountered this before. The strain, I believe he mentioned was GT?

He lost his entire crop cause he was stupid and tried to dry em in a food dehydrator (i told him not to) and they cooked... his entire room smelled like chocolate cookies/brownies. It was the weirdest damn thing!

Anyone ever encountered this before? Either of the situations?

I'll try and get him to take some pictures, but he's a paranoid fuck :P he wouldn't even post on here. So I had to do it.

Well if they`re GT then yes it`s happened to me as well.
Not the chocolate smell though.
My last batch on the 2nd flush grew tall and big but split along the stems when they bent.
And now that they`re dry their stems are thin and totally hollow.
The 1st flush produced thick meaty stems.
go figure.

I double checked with my friend, they were GT's from TLG.

*shrugs* Honestly, it was the chocolate smell that threw me more than anything, he told me, and I didn't believe him, so I went over there...
That was just fucking weird.

He said next time he gets a good example of it, he'd take a picture of it for me.
(I'm a persuasive little shit)

*bump*
Has no one experienced this?
I'm quite frankly, baffled. Do you think they're safe to consume?

I havent had the chocolatey smell, but every flush I seen grown with Scotts, the stems have been real thin, a lot of the looked as if they collapsed into themselves.
The first one that was picked, was squeezed and it was like a squirt gun. They supposedly were all yummy though in the end.

No no! I did understand your post, sorry.
When I asked the second time, I was referring mostly to the chocolate smell, since it seemed that the thin/split stems was normal.

dude you possibly are believing it`s a chocolate smell when in reality it`s actually a strong reaction causing a hectic smell??
I had some pR that ones I cut them open actually smelt bad, they made me want to wrech, they smelt soo strong.
That was a slight reactio to me cutting them
Once they were dry the smelt normal and tasted great.

No  it's not just me, I asked three other people what they smelled like... I got
"Cocoa" "Chocolate" "Candy"
:P

Once dried, all smell seemed to go away. *Shrug*

I know what it looks like and I`m sure loads of ppl do as well.
It will happen.
I think the main problem you`re having is actually the choco choco chocolate smell.

That first pic looks like a one legged guy bending over to eat a shroom or something.
