MI : Michigan Voters Pass Medical Marijuana Measure
#9186451 - 11/05/08 12:00 AM (15 years, 5 months ago) |
|
|
Lansing (ap) -- Michigan voters on Tuesday passed a medical marijuana ballot measure - making the state the 13th to allow severely ill patients to use the illegal drug.
With 42 percent of the precincts reporting, 63 percent, or 1,077,103 people, voted "Yes" on Proposal 1, which removes state penalties for registered patients to buy, grow and use small amounts of marijuana. Thirty-seven percent, or 619,882 voters, were opposed.
Opponents couldn't derail the measure. In fact, only one state, South Dakota, has failed to OK a ballot attempt. Of the 12 other states with medical marijuana laws, eight stemmed from ballot initiatives; four were enacted by state legislatures.
Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Bill Schuette, chairman of the opposition group Citizens Protecting Michigan's Kids, said he was disappointed with the outcome but not the effort.
``It appears we came up short,'' he said. ``We waged a good campaign, a hard-fought campaign. But we were severely underfunded, and that's always a challenge.''
The coalition included more than two dozen medical, law enforcement, anti-drug and other organizations, including the Michigan State Medical Society, the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan and Citizens for Traditional Values.
Dianne Byrum, spokeswoman for the support group Citizens Protecting Michigan's Kids, called it a ``victory for patients and their families.''
``Voters knew right from the beginning the medical value of marijuana,'' she said.
Opponents launched their first TV ad last week that says so-called ``pot shops'' exploded in California when that state passed a medical marijuana law. Critics such as law enforcement officials say Michigan's law wouldn't prevent the proliferation of stores that grow and sell marijuana.
Backers responded that the Michigan measure was significantly different from California's law. Supporters' ads featured a woman who suffers from multiple sclerosis and experiences blindness from optic neuritis, and a retired physician who helped his wife by procuring medical marijuana to ease her symptoms of chemotherapy as she underwent treatment for ovarian cancer.
While the measure will remove state-level penalties for registered patients using marijuana, it won't create legal dispensaries for the drug. Nor will it affect the federal ban on marijuana, which makes possessing marijuana for any purpose illegal.
Proposal 1 advocates ran ads urging voters to support the measure. They featured Rochelle Lampkin of Detroit, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and experiences blindness from optic neuritis, and George Wagoner, a retired physician from Manistee who helped his wife of 51 years by procuring medical marijuana to ease her symptoms of chemotherapy Larry Lenchner, 56, of Birmingham, voted for the measure.
``If you got cancer and you're dying and you want to smoke weed, it's just another pharmaceutical to me,'' he said.
Patricia Ross, 40, also of Birmingham, voted against the measure because she's worried about children getting access to marijuana. - __________________ Marijuana Is Only Addictive In The Sense That All Good Things In Life Are Worth Repeating...

I myself am from Plymouth, Michigan - Its about time Michigan saw some - State-Wide reform of some kind!
Its a small step in the right direction -
I would love to take a moment -
To thank those of you that took time/effort to support this campaign - any way you could! - now its time to take a moment - to celebrate this small (yet much needed) step forward, to pat ourselves on the back & to take a breather - then its time to get back to work!

The initiative, Proposal 1 (Official Known As The Michigan Medical Marihuana Act), will go into effect by December 4, and the Department of Community Health will have an additional 120 days to issue regulations for a medical marijuana registry.

That's awesome, I guess we're gonna have to do this thing one state at a time. I'm fine by that. It makes me happy that the MAJORITY of voters understood something so simple, and made something right. I can't wait to see what state wants to be lucky # 14? And every lucky number after that.

Thank God. Now I can finally get a script to treat my severe incurable anxiety, depression, and insomnia. And apply for a licenses to grow.
I'm also glad they passed the stem sell research proposal. The catholic church spent a ton of money on tv ads that outright lied about stem cells being funded publicly. I'm never buying or donating anything that might go to a church again. Because these cult like freaks don't want unused stem cells being used to help cure disease or allow people to walk again (like my 18 year old neighbor who was paralyzed in a car accident on his way to meet his dad fishing)they will do anything to stop it.
And to think I bought a candy bar from some group of church kids, makes me sick.
Anyway, next proposal on the ballot better be decriminalization.

I live in Northern Michigan and I am so glad this passed. I voted for it yesterday and before the election I talked to everyone I knew about voting for it.
The only problem with this is that it isn't as easy to get as in California. Here in Michigan you aren't going to be able to go to your doctor complain of insomnia and get a card. You pretty much need to be terminally ill (AIDS, Cancer, etc.) to get the doctor's recommendation. Plus it sounds like there won't be any dispensaries.
For this to start being a federal thing we need at least 13 more states. That will be the majority of the states and we are only half way there. We also need to start rallying for recreational use as it is no where close to as bad as alcohol.

I'm glad this bill has finally passed in state of Michigan where I would greatly benefit from the new law legalizing medicinal. I can finally use a medication legally that isn"t as strong and eaiser on the body than morphine which I am currently prescribed. Morphine sometimes helps with the pain, but gives me a great feeling of uncontrolable nausea with sometimes causes me to miss work.

ah....
sweet internet... i missed you.
wouldn't you know i lost internet the night of the election so i had to rely on TV (and phone calls from family with internet) for my news...at last we did it guys good work.
the rally that i planned for it took place as scheduled on election night during peak voting hours two blocks from one of the busiest polling locations in town and turned out great about 40+ people a good mix of all people including two on duty EMS workers, a local brain surgeon and his nurse wife, a few AIDS/HIV sufferers, and a lady in a wheelchair with her seeing eye dog, as well as a hippie bus full of multicolored freaks adorning american flags for capes during the peak of activity. we recieved overwhelming support from passing voters and more people kept stopping to join us.
this opens a lot of possibility for michigan residents including a new medical defense valid for even unregistered MJ users. As kungpow pointed out it'll only be available to patients with terminal illnesses, but thats temporary as it leaves room for the michigan department fo community health to define new conditions that would be approved for med MJ use, the initial list was just to create a starting point. also a privelage for doctors to prescribe for other conditions that they feel the patient could benefit from use (but i don't know excatly what the stipulations for doing this are). Most importantly this starts to pave a way to a better place to live.
now i'm focused on the next couple steps, finding patients and pushing towards further legalization. Also letter writing to obama and congress til the raids and arrests of medical growers, users, clubs and landlords ceases.
I just want to thank all the michigan voters who helped us make this possible. and to the other people who really worked for this thing with us GREAT JOB!
