50/50 casing with pennington fast acting lime?
    #9178002 - 11/03/08 04:54 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I want to use the 50/50 casing tek but I saw a past post and someone said this was no good. Here's what I'm talking about.

I know its not hydrated limestone but why is this no good?

NEW UPDATE:
Although most people, including us, have great success from using horticultural hydrated lime, some do not. They end up burning their mycelium or the mycelium just never colonizes through to the casing soil. We think perhaps the hydrated lime they are buying has a much higher alkaline level then then the Hi Yield brand we are using. Hi Yield brand is our preference and works great for us. But just to play it on the safe side, we are going to suggest you buy calcium carbonate. A ground calcium carbonate is a gentle buffer. Some brands of hydrated lime are not. Calcium carbonate is basically ground up limestone, a soil sweetener. It works just as good if not better then horticultural hydrated lime. Its a much safer bet as well. You should be able to find calcium carbonate in just about any garden supply store.

Another tip, look for the large chunked oyster shell sold at feed stores. The fine powder shell is fine, the but the large chunked shell gives a much better texture and the mushrooms grow even better on this soil. You can find oyster shell anywhere birds are sold, or at most feed stores.

The exact mix, to fill a filter patch bag 3/4 full is:

    * 15 1/2 cups vermiculite
    * 15 1/2 cups peat moss
    * 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
    * 1.2 cups of hydrated lime
    * 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon

Thats from the 50/50 casing plus and it says calcium carbonate can be better than using hydrated lime, but then in its recipe it uses hydrated lime anyways? So if I were to just use this "Fast Acting Lime" what ratio would I use? Thanks

Calcium Carbonate, which is what you have there, is relatively slow acting unless in a fine powder.  We use hydrated lime to rapidly swing the pH into the zone we want and then calcium carbonate chunks to hold it there over the long term.

So, in that recipe, powdered calcium carbonate kind of fills the same purpose that the oyster shell and hydrated lime do.

Is that bag fine powder or pellets?

Its fine pellets.  I wetted a few though and they dissolved very quickly.  How would I decide how much to use though if I were to only use that?  Does anyone have experience or do I have to get a pH meter?

It looks like calcium carbonate.  It's poorly soluble in water.  It tends to only raise the pH to 7 and not much higher.  This makes it fool proof but not ideal.  I've been using it and it has definitely helped out my casings.  I just add a nice frosting of it to my peat in a bucket before i fill it with water and let it soak.  I do this to break up the clumps and remove sand and sticks.

The 50/50 calls for 4 and change cups of oyster shells, so if it were me, I would use 2 cups max.  Like he said, it is fool proof.  You can't overdo it with carbonate.

I have used that same product. the pennington fast acting lime. It raises the ph to 7 right away which is ideal but not foolproof. You say calcium carbonate which is what we have here takes a while to start working, so how do you explain the ph from raising using this product? I used this product awhile ago. iT raised the ph to 7 I used it in my casing and within 2 weeks no sign of pins and trich started to grow....

It does raise the ph right away. but if its calcium carbonate. wouldnt this be the best ph buffer to use ?
