Grateful Dead, definitely. When I'm tripping, picking out a playlist is such a daunting task, but if I throw on a Dead show I don't have to worry about picking new music for ~3 hours.

I think that alcohol, mdma, and weed are much better for listening to music than psychedelics. Lower doses of psychedelics can be great for music too, though. Of course Pink Floyd is great, especially while tripping, but come on you guys, can we get past the Dead, the Doors, Hendrix, Cream, Zeppelin, and Floyd? I mean, that stuff is great and all, but I stopped being obsessed with it when I was 14.
There is so much great new music. Someone earlier mentioned Animal Collective/Panda Bear. That is a perfect example. That is incredible, new, fresh music. There is a ton of great new electronic music, and not just cheesy shit like Shpongle and techno. Boys Noize, Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Dan Deacon, etc., etc. Personally, I don't prefer "trippy" music while tripping. In fact, I tend to avoid it. Trippy music, to me, is for when you're sober. When you're tripping out, everything sounds trippy.
My suggestion is to decide while you are tripping, as I tend to be very picky while I'm tripping. I tend to pick music that I have been really into lately, or music that I have a past with.

Seriously? That's a concept I could never wrap my head around.
Weed and mdma make music great for sure, alcohol does nearly nothing to music for me, sometimes even makes it worse.
But psychedelics make music unbelievable in my opinion. All my best trips have been centered around lots of music. Playing and listening.

since music is subjective just listen to whatever you like. what works for me may not work for you. try to stay away from music that gives bad vibes. i mostly listen to grateful dead, allman brothers, bob marley and the wailers, pink floyd. some electronic/ambient/world music is nice and relaxing. i generally go with music i can meditate to.

that is stange. i love his melodies. his voice, the lyrics, although it is repetitive, it is soothing to me. i'll listen to all types of reggae when i trip i just put marley cause he gets the most exposure.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Infected Mushroom yet. Personally I love trance and techno while I'm tripping, especially when It's very loud and I can literally feel the base beat on my skin. My favorite is Roll us a Giant but also try Becoming Insane, of course, and maybe I wish and Muse Breaks.

i personally prefer basic instumental music, thanks to whoever pointed out beastie boys instrumentals, in sound is awesome. lately i been listen to Medeski martin and wood - uninvisible- i'm certain the organ player is the devil in some of his songs, also try augustus pablo, he's a reggae/DUB pioneer who plays a melodica-i like listening to east of the river nile but make sure u get the one with extra tracks.

I agree, IMO nothing beats putting on a few choice Dead albums on repeat, for me it seems to be like a roller-coaster. Certain songs initiate certains emotions and feelings that I cannot seem to get from any other type of music.
Most listeners don't like the song, "What's become of the baby", but for me that is such a deep and powerfully emotional song. Grateful Dead is a tripping staple for me.

As far as goa/psytrance goes it's awesome, but Infected Mushroom does a pretty great job of totally missing the point and not doing much but purposely bugging me out, with nothing behind the bug-out.
Here's some streaming radio stations that are amazing for tripping, if you like doing it around a computer:

Pitch Black(nz), Bluetech, Shulman, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Entheogenic, Angel Tears, Evan Marc (if you can find his albums [same guy that is in Bluetech]), OTT, Hol Bauman, Ulrich Schnauss. I love electronica, and definitely while tripping. The first 5 are awesome. Oh, there's also Phutureprimitive, I met him the other night. Good guy. There's tons of great electronic music if you want to go that route.

these albums are very good for a tripping playlist, and are all for the most part on the mellow side with some other stuff thrown in for variety. very psychedelic; enjoy!

IDK. Eat static is a little heavy for my taste. I like this:

i didnt really like crash and burn. you should check out back to earth. its very very well produced, got some world influence in there, and some very mellow chillout/jazzy type tracks too. one of the best chill albums to come out this year if you ask me.
i couldn't play that track... the clip no worky for me.

Trout Mask Replica was a tripping favorite for a long time. How about Gong... Flying Teapot?
Haha - I must admit I have never listened to Gong. Perhaps I should look into them, yes?
Off on another tangent - Gyuto Monks? Tantric Trilogy - unearthly Buddhist chanting. Not everyone's cup of tea perhaps...
Anyone into Miles Davis? - Sketches of Spain and Kind of Blue?
Getting out of hand now... John McLaughlin's Mahvishnu Orchestra? Return To Forever? Dixie Dregs with Steve Morse?

I opened my last trip to Bonobo and the new "4:13 Dream" album by The Cure.
Then music was off while I was peaking and I came down to Shpongle's "Nothing Lasts... But Nothing Is Lost." It was about over when the Terrence McKenna sample came in. lol.
The Cure is pretty shroomy, to say the least. So if you're into them, give 'em a shot next time.
I like music on shrooms, acid, pot and alcohol. But I have to say it's been best on LSD.

check out the Drugs to the Dear youth EP or the self titled album by Tera Melos... don't know if you're in to that sort of thing but no one else has mentioned it yet and I'd say that it fits quite well with any psychedelic.

Bitches brew is pretty heady and hectic, but if you understand the music......
I honestly would suggest some ravi shankar. Its all echoes. It resembles the psychedelic experience very well. Again, thats if you understand how that music works to some degree(some people might get it right away).
Why do people think phish and the dead are so good for psychedelic experience? They are wild. Phish is like a circus made of shapes and color. The dead is a bit like hearing bells jingling on the tree of consciousness. The tree/branches being the core of the music and the bells are the ornaments.
For me, phish is more mindblowing and alien on psychedelics than the dead. The dead is very earthy but very much just as trippy.
Herbie hancock's "man child" Check it out yalls. There is even a song called "bubbles". Sounds like bubbles playing in the ocean. The sounds are round, they move and they are of different sizes.......lol

Last time I dosed mushrooms I put on "The King's Jam" right as I was beginning to peak. It's a great album that just has Jimi Hendrix and BB King jamming out some serious blues. Very little vocals (only a track or two) so its easy to get lost in.

You are just making it blatently obvious you have never been to a good rave on acid. You haven't got a clue till you've done it. Rave music is not for staying at home. That's where IDM comes in (aphex twin, clark, r. devine etc.) though this is still amazing at a rave.
Clark is god. http://www.last.fm/music/Clark

Smashing Pumpkins - Drown
probably one of the most chill and psychadelic songs ive ever heard.
starts quiet, leads into a crazy guitar solo, then to a climax, then to a 4 minute tripped out feedback solo.
just listen to it and see what i mean

Anybody have experience with some of Beethoven's symphonies? I'd imagine that they would be absolutely perfect for tripping.
Next time I dose I plan to listen to this album I have called "Aluminum". It's a collection of White Stripes songs reworked into an orchestral set. It's insane, and since the Stripes are among my favorite bands I imagine it would be great. f

So many greats mentioned here. I think its going to be all relative to what type of experience is desired. Remember its all about SET AND SETTING. Music is such a huge part of it. I plan my music carefully and purposefully in the months leading up to a well planned trip. Maybe someone here would be interested in making a list of psychedelic bands and the effects each one can bring(ex. visual, existential, spiritual, love/feeling impulse, etc.... That would be pretty cool. I know this is taking it pretty seriously, but I think it deserves the thought.

My favorite music to trip to...
on acid: M83 (Best album: Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts) on shrooms: Black Moth Super Rainbow (Best album: Dandelion Gum)
A lot of people aren't going to like The Mars Volta, but that shit is crazy to listen to while tripping.
Everyone trips to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc. so I thought I'd recommend some modern bands.

yeah i never got the idea of a DJ being called a musician, but what a freak of nature i was thinking of DJ logic as a respectable DJ. i've only heard him with medeski martin wood and was pretty impressed with how well how he works with the band.

Well thats some good wiki-ing there dude.
Thats just how jazz works though. They love trading songs............lol
Its this "version" that im talking about. I hope you understand why I found your comment to be hilarious.
Its just funny. Were all good.
The great songs are explored by most jazz musicians, but im sure you knew that.

Djs are for suckers and dumbasses.
djs are just audiophiles, producers and music freaks that like to mix tracks together. no one said it was that innovative, really there are shitloads of djs, but to beatmatch and mix well takes some amount of skill. the ability to create a certain flow or feeling out of a (sometimes random) selection of songs is truly an artform. i think maybe if you heard the right DJ you might change your mind, esp if they played music you could relate to. not all djs play hip hop and top forty and techno. i play dowtempo, trip hop, IDM, dub, and other psychedelic genres. for me it was never about the ego or making it big but about the music. i just love so many different types of music that it was kind of natural that i had an interest in the art.
here is a psymbient mix i made last night. if you give it a listen you might like it. i thought it was OK. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YUD04WG0

I didnt mean that............. Its my fault. I even dont like the idea of disliking djs in gerneral. I was very drunk. Ill just put it that way. I feel certain ways about things sometimes.
