What the Hell?!

So, my buddy and I were leaning against a tree smoking a blunt near the forest outside his house. All of the sudden we hear a few branches crack, and this 4-5 lb rock drops straight down about 3 feet in front of us!
It's about the size of a grapefruit and there's really no logical explanation for it falling out of the tree, (or being there in the first place) so the only reasonable explanation is that it came from the sky.
Was it stuck in an airplane's landing gear? Did a mammoth raccoon drop it at us? Did a huge fucking eagle mistake it for a rodent? We're really at a loss, and a little spooked.
What could it have been??

It was completely cold, we had considered that, and it looked just like any other rock from the area, kind of a granite with quartz.

Are there little kids in your area? They might've put it in the tree. Kids do some strange stuff.

Meteors are generally cold when they land, AFAIK. The atmosphere strips away the exterior leaving the icy center (or dust).
So it definitely could've been a meteor, though that sounds a little on the large side.

A piece of space station trash the size of a refrigerator is poised to plunge through the Earth's atmosphere late Sunday, more than a year after an astronaut tossed it overboard.
NASA and the U.S. Space Surveillance Network are tracking the object — a 1,400-pound (635-kilogram) tank of toxic ammonia coolant thrown from the international space station — to make sure it does not endanger people on Earth. Exactly where the tank will inevitably fall is currently unknown, though it is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere Sunday afternoon or later that evening, NASA officials said.
"This has got a very low likelihood that anybody will be impacted by it," said Mike Suffredini, NASA's space station program manager, in an interview. "But still, it is a large object and pieces will enter and we just need to be cautious."

Last time we did shrooms, we were out in a little forest (extremely little) when we happened across a tree that ticked. There were four of us, and we all heard it.
It was seriously weird. We tried moving around the tree, near the tree and away from it. It was definitely coming from the tree. The ticking was almost like a clock, very repetitive. We still don't know what it was.

I don't know how to quote multiple people. @ ToiletDuk, the tree is about 55 ft tall, and there aren't any branches until about 25-30 ft up. There is no way a little kid could have gotten up there. (we thought about it though)
@ Toddo, it didn't go in the ground at all! That's one of the things that baffled us, there's no good reason for it being in the tree, but if it fell from the sky it should have had a fairly fast terminal velocity.
@ Brugman, it went absolutely straight down, right in front of our field of vision. Plus, he lives outside of town kind of in the woods. There aren't any kids around there until the summer.

Yep. A beetle or some kind of grub was probably to blame for that
As far as the rock goes... I'd go with kids playing around too. I used to make "booby traps" where is someone hit a trigger a rock would fall out of a tree on them. I watched a lot of Macgyver as a kid.

It was just the two of us, and we were both leaning on the same tree. I guess I'll write it off to ghosts, I think aside from that a meteor is the most plausible explanation... but what are the odds of that??
