Pragmatism Vs. Religion
    #916948 - 09/29/02 04:16 PM (15 years, 21 days ago)

In almost every aspect of my life I would consider myself pragmatic. However, I do have a deep "FAITH" in God. Would this seem to be a contradictory notion? Many have told me yes. I don't feel it is but am curious as to other opinions.

Main Entry: prag?ma?tism
Pronunciation: 'prag-m&-"ti-z&m
Function: noun
Date: circa 1864
1 : a practical approach to problems and affairs ied to strike a balance between principles and pragmatism>
2 : an American movement in philosophy founded by C. S. Peirce and William James and marked by the doctrines that the meaning of conceptions is to be sought in their practical bearings, that the function of thought is to guide action, and that truth is preeminently to be tested by the practical consequences of belief

It's only a contradiction if you think it is. So if you don't think it is, then it is not.

A very superficial and oversimplified definition would be: seeing is believing.

How could others opinions be explained in detail in another thread. I was polling to see if others believe this to be a contradiction.

Being opinions, I fail to see how it could be explained unless the same question was aked of the same people.

Peace

Hold the cakes!  And make mine crumpets!

I was replying to you.  I was letting you know that your brilliant simple premise was discussed at length in a thread I created and that if you wanted a more detailed answer you could look there.

I was helping.

You are the bright bulb, aren't you? (not referring to this misunderstanding but your overall questions and answers)

Cheers,
