YES! Don't know if anyone else has tried Apollonaris (sp?) sparkling mineral water in their substrate but it really helps. The mineral content is very high in that particular brand.
I assumed that the CO2 all dissipated upon pressure cooking. I only used it to beef up the mineral content of the substrate.

Why not just use mineral water to begin with?...thats what I do

It's not the minerals that I'm looking for really (although I'm sure they probably don't hurt), it's the C02 that I'm interested in. Mycelium prefer a high CO2 environment, which seems would be able to be created by the addition of sparkeling water, even after pressure cooking the CO2 should be permeated into your substrate and there should be some left (at least more CO2 than with plain water anyway)...

Sorry sutec, but the CO2 virtually doesn?t dissolve in water at the boiling temperature, so all of the CO2 will dissipate. But why bother anyway, the mycelium produces enough CO2 on it?s own.

Like all (non plant... ) living things, CO2 is a waste product.. ie bad!... mycelium produces its own CO2.. if you tape, then there is no reason to.. and anyway, when you PC it.. it mixes with the air in the PC.. so there is NO point!.. its just a waste.. spores need O2 to germinate.. and CO2 is just bad.. the only reason to have high CO2 for spawn and initial incubation run is primarily so that primordia doesnt form and the myc thinks that it is not yet a good time to stop growing and fruit..

DinoMyc, high CO2 levels in the spawn run stage promote mycelium growth, so it is actualy good at this stage! At the pinning stage though, you want low CO2 levels and high humidity.
