I agree. Whether or not that snake intended to eat that frog, it's dead. Thats a venomous snake. Not sure on the exact species... lots of tree snakes look like that. Same goes for the treefrog, pretty generic looking.

Still a BAD ASS picture. I'd love to know the story behind it, how the dude got the shot.

According to the caption at the site, that picture was taken during an hours-long battle between the frog and the snake.

Man it so amazing to think that a simple tree frog was able to survive for HOURS against a snake, venomous or not.

Beautiful or not this is a once in a lifetime shot.

Reminds me of the opening scene from Baraka where the little monkeys are soaking in the hot springs.  They look like they have very specific expressions of emotion on their faces.  Intriguing shot, very impressive.. thanks for sharing OMR.

I`ve not found any credible source calling it a fake, only the self-proclaimed `photoshop experts` that leave comments in online articles.  The scientists who research and photograph orangutans seem to think it`s real.

Quote:

Hi! Thanks for such an intelligent post. This picture is certainly making the rounds– but you really gave it the attention it deserves.

The photo is 100% real. The orangutan pictured is just one of hundreds living at the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, which is operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation in Borneo (Indonesia) and managed by Lone Droscher Nielsen.

Kaja is a small island in the middle of the Rongan River where several dozen orangutans are living until they can be released back into a safe section of the rainforest. The problem is that due to the unchecked spreading of palm oil plantations, the forest is being cut down and orangutans are being slaughtered. This orangutan, like the 650 others at Nyaru Menteng, is an orphan. He watched as his mother was murdered and his forest home was destroyed.

You can see him and the others on the series “Orangutan Island” on Animal Planet.

Because of deforestation by the palm oil industry, orangutans are predicted to be extinct in the wild in less than 10 years. To learn more about orangutans and how to help them, please visit the Orangutan Outreach website at redapes.org.

Thanks, Rich

In the series of photos, the two with the 'tan and the spear.. the spear he's holding appears to be perfectly straight in the latter of the two while in the first it is crooked right past the point of his hand.

The reflections on the water right at where his foot meets the branch/root/vine he's hanging from look real enough but where's the reflection or shadow of his spear when it's plunged into the water?  The light source (sun) is obviously behind the subject, so it stands to reason that SOME form of shadow or reflection, albeit distorted, would be cast on the water regardless of how wavy.  It also appears as though the spear has slid down through his grasp a few feet upon his thrusting it into the water.. this is normal for the notion of spear fishing, but the spear looks completely different in thickness and straightness.

The 2nd photo looks even more photoshopped.

weight of the spear causes it to curve until it impacts the
water giving it some resistance and taking that bow out

the  water is breaking up the outline of the shadow of the
orangutan and the spear, if the water was calm it would
appear as a reflection, try examining the photo a little more
carefully and with more objectivity

I feel my observations are valid enough.  The physics you described still don't account for the thickening of the bow and the positioning, plus ripples on the water don't explain away the complete lack of a shadow.

Plus, it appears as though the vines he's bracing himself on haven't moved at all.  Wouldn't you think that all that force going into straightening out a spear like that would at least jar the vines into swaying out of position in some way?

edit:  On closer observations, the vines do support motion between frames.  My bad.  The single first shot alone looked shopped in my honest opinion.

No fucking way.

I saw the video. That orangutan really fucks with local fishermen. There are a couple of orangutans that watch the local fishermen and learn what they do.

A lot of the fishers will put lines down with several hooks on them with bottles attached to a string so they can tell where the line is. The orangutans figured out what was going on when they saw the fishermen pulling up their lines and started stealing all of their fishing lines/traps. I thought it was one of the most brilliant/hilarious things I've seen.

Wow if it is real.  Does anyone have the movie?  If I only saw the picture, I would be willing to bet money that it was photoshopped.  My reasons are the soft blur on the contour of the animal usually is used to cover up differences in the CGI and the outer picture.  The grain, grittiness and brightness are a bit off between the background and the animal.  The main reason is because the bottom pictures is completely different and does not have the same stamp in the upper right corner, implying that it was taken right after the animal was done hunting to trick the viewer.

If it is from a credible source, which is seems to be, then that is pretty interesting and a neat picture!

the spear tapers narrow at the tip, thick at the back, look
again at the top picture, there isnt a lack of shadow, again
examine the picture, the shadow is broken up, closer to the
shore it's less broken because there's a wind break reducing
the peaks, further out you have a lot of light scattering and
reflecting from those peaks, it breaks up the shadow a great deal
