Perlite/tupperware problems
    #916248 - 09/29/02 02:14 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Using tupperware and wet perlite, these 4 cakes produced about 1 mushroom apiece before quitting. The mycelium appears to have spread to the perlite where mushrooms are popping up. So what's wrong with this setup?

Two things: Miracle gro perlite was used and is believed to be responsible for some of the contamination. Also, metal lids were the cause of the rust and will not be used next time.

Any tips?

take the cakes off the perlite. also try scratching the cakes with a sterilized fork. that will shock the myceclyum into producing more mushrooms.

if the perilite has nutrients in it that could be bad..perlite should have no nutrients...also you shouldnt have the cakes resting directly on top of the perlite..they soak up too much water

I generally would not suggest sitting your cakes directly on the perlite, but cover the bottom.
The reason they are fruiting from the bottom could either be that the bottom is the only area with the required moisture to form fruits, but its more likely the fact that the cakes were allowed to form invirto pins on the bottom when exposed to light, and where these pins have formed is the side you've left sitting on the perlite.
Always put h202 in your perlite to avoid contams!

I couldn't find anywhere any information concerning scratching a cake, particularly after a flush on a casing.
Can anyone give me a link or explain quickly what to do and what is the exact result?
Thx

Use the top to a pringles can to sit em on, the little plastic lids. They work fine and are w/ in means to be had.

You can sit your cakes on wet perlite to rehydrate them. This does not mean that you can leave them on the perlite though, similar to a dunk in concept though probably less effective (easy though)

Get some plastic lids for your jars. Hopefully you should be able to find them next to the
canning jars at your local supermarket, but YMMV. These things are great, they never
rust and can be used to sit between the cakes and the perlite. You can also flame a nail
red hot and poke holes through them to make the standard 4 hole innoculation lid.

Would it be best to aviod placing the soon to be fruiting cakes on the metal jar lids? If that is not possible, would tin foil work, or should I get the plastic lids if possible.
