The Spiritual Sickness Of America
    #9150191 - 10/28/08 06:59 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I think many of the cultural ills that afflict America are the result of America being considered a superpower. This idea seems to afflict the American psyche with a sort of arrogance. According to various spiritual traditions being humble is necessary in order to be spiritually well. Being humble does not mean being weak. So essentially I think America is spiritually sick due to not being humble. Americans would be better off if they felt that America was just a regular country as opposed to a superpower.

What do you mean by spiritually sick and humble.  Humility isn't a natural emotion for alot of people.

By humble I don't mean viewing oneself as inferior to others. By humble I mean minding ones own business. I'm not against charity and feeding the poor, I think those things are great.

By spiritual sickness I mean people in America are not chill. They are always doing something crazy and extreme for thrills... growing up with this idea that as an American your responsible for what happens in the world is a huge burden and its horrible.

Due to the fact Americans are so worried about what happens in the world they don't enjoy themselves and enjoy the stuff they have in their neighborhoods.

Basically I think many Americans gain their sense of self by doing things to other people... sort of like a cop on a power trip. Now I don't think all cops are bad however there are certainly those cops who like to go on power trips because they feel some sort of inadequacy. A cop on a power trip gains a sense of personal worth by degrading other people.

I think this is the case with America as a whole. I think America is a cop on a power trip and this is why America is degrading the world.

Its better for Americans to chill out and learn to meditate so that they gain there sense of self by going within. Its also good for people to enjoy their surroundings so they can gain there sense of self by enjoying the their surroundings of whatever environment they happen to be in... its not cool for America to be a cop on a power trip.

while i don't agree with the term "superpower", we (america as a whole) are a "super-influence" on so, so many countries.  if/when we fail, and can no longer export food/goods to various countries, many of their resources would dry up, as they depend largely upon us

also, it's hard for most citizens to not see themselves that way as it has been told and/or drilled into them visually for all of their lives.  conditioning is a hard thing to break/undo, especially for the unwilling or those who do not recognize it as such

I think David Icke said it best, "Religion kills Spirituality, Schools kill Education." You could do this for almost every institution.

America is in an even worse place of Spiritual Apathy. Those that are smart enough to see past the obvious fallacious of the religious institution they are indoctrinated into turn to atheism or nihilism, which I am happy to say I escaped from.

What's wrong with nihilism?

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Is there any way that America can shy away from this attitude that it possesses or is it just going to go even more downhill?

I would say that rampant materialism, selfishness, and the lingering intellectual malaise of Puritanism are doing their damage too.

American culture is rather infantile, has a lot to learn; this is partially why people look down on us. Europeans have a written history of thousands of years to look back on and learn from, but Americans of European descent tend to blank out all of that and focus on the 400-tops years their kin have lived here. This seems to take place with foreign immigrants who integrate as well. There isn't much respect or care for origins in popular American thought.

I imagine we have some hard lessons coming up, though.

I wouldn't say America suffers from a "spiritual sickness" per se (any worse than the sickness suffered by all of humanity, that is), but that we can best be seen as very enormous, very dangerous, child of about four years who is prone to throwing awful tantrums.
