sweetness...so after it's done adjusting, where is the best place to put the heater in whatever I'm using as an incubator?

If you take a cooler and divide it in half (in your mind) the fishbowl is on one half and the jars are on the other.

okay..so I have to keep the heater in the cup and put it in the aquarium I'm using then turn on the heater? I do have a thermometer but I"m not sure how to get the temp. accurately measured..just put it next to the heater maybe? I do get what you're saying about splitting the box in half though.

Is the water line on aquarium heaters always a minimum level or is that a maximum level???

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I think that's the minimum level that the water should be at..you're supposed to put the water above the line though.

right on..I've got my heater heating up and the thermometer in there..I'm not sure how warm it will get, but I know how to adjust the temp. so it should work. so when it gets to 80 or so and I want to set it up in the incubator, I can't just take it out of the cup and put it at the bottom of the aquarium right? Do I have to leave it in the cup with water or what? That's the only part i'm a little confused about now.

ilikeshrooms, you seem to be missing the point that the heater must ALWAYS be submerged in water. Trying to run it without it in water will probably break it.

alright, so it has to always be submerbed in water...when it gets where I want it I'll just place it inside my aquarium with the jars and let it do its thing then and I should be okay?

StS has got it, the heater needs to be in water. Just put the cup with the water and heater in the incubation chamber, get the constant desired temp, and then add the jars.

Hey, just wanted to tell you (skikid16) that the incubator is working great! Once I got the temp. down to 80 I left it...it was getting up over 100 and I had to lower the setting on the dial. It's all good now and the jars are in there. I'm going to check back later this week..maybe Wednesday or Thursday to see if they have started colonizing. Thank you so much for all the help, it was and still is greatly apprectiated. peace out

heh, actually..I just went and checked on it and the temp. seems to have dropped a bit to the mid 60's..I've turned the dial up on the heater to warm up the water in hopes this will raise the temperature of the incubator to a comfy 80 degrees. This should help the temp. in there..I'll just have to tinker with it a bit.

keeping it around 80 is good 86 for optimal

I always liked anno's incubator design as well

I finally got the temp back up to 80..it's stayed there for about 30 mintues now..I could turn the heater up a little but that seems to increase the humiditiy quite a bit. Is it ok if there is some humidity in the incubator?

I've got it up to 82 now..not sure if I want it to get up to 86 or not. I know it's the optimal temp. for colinization but correct me if I'm wrong by saying that if it's 82 in the incubator won't it be a few degrees warmer in the jars? so if it's 86 is the air temp in the incubator won't it be close to or even over 90 in the jars?
