another question for the cactus people

ok..ive done reading, and ive done searching, and ive tried to ask the gods to give me a vision about this question, but they didnt.  okay stupidity aside...ive read about bottom watering.  i just want to know how would i go about doing this (okay maybe the supidity isnt aside, but im trying here)  any help will be greatly appreciated.

ive just transplanted a cactus, and need to water the thing.  im assuming bottom watering is the way to go, but please ket me know :crazy: thanks, phil

Bottom watering is better for the plants because it encourages better root growth, they grow down that way. The way you bottom water is put a tray under the pot and fill with water, leave it there untill the soil is moist at the top then take it away... you don't want it to just sit in the water, could cause root rot.

Bottom watering only works when the soil you're using is hydrophilic. Most cactus soils would not do very well with a bottom watering. If you're talking about placing the pot in a large bowl or bucket of some type where the water level is as high as just under the top of the soil, this would work.

It's still useful to top water from time to time to help wash away accumulated salts, etc.

ok thanks for your advice guys. ill try what you said mickey about makeing sure that the water level is high enough to water the plant (from the bottom)...then i will pour some in through the top during later waterings.

thanks for the info pc....how do you recomend watering then? do you just water like you would a regular plant? would i have to be worried if the cactus got wet? thanks for the info again:) phil

When the cactus is in full growth mode, I would water it whenever the top couple of inches of soil is dry. During the dormant months, water less.
