My Cheap and Easy Incubator

My cat rosco coundn't seem to find a decent place to incubate his jars so he built an incubator himself. He told me that it might be helpful to the people on shroomery. Here's what he did:
He took a box that is appx. 15 inches long, 10 inches tall and 9 inches wide. He placed a heating pad without the cover inside the bottome of the box and placed a small layer of advertisement paper over the pad. He then placed the jars on top of the paper. With the box closed the temp stays at a consistent 80 degrees with the pad on high.
Goood kitty.

The heating pad may dry out your jars, why not just buy a styrofoam cooler and a fish tank heater. You put the heater into a jar filled with water, place it in the cooler with your jars, then you turn on the heater. Just be sure to moniter temp. Its easy and pretty cheap, under $15.

I agree with the styrofoam cooler and fish tanker heater it works great! The heating pad will dry your jars out after awhile. With the jars in the cooler and fish tank heater your jars will colonize in about 3 weeks. :-)

so the heat pad is a bad idea? I can't get a hold of a fish tank heater right now. I do have some paper beneath the jars and it's barely warm underneath them..comfortable heat. Can I just get a fish tank heater at Kmart or a pet store?

You can get a tank heater for 13 bucks at petsmart. I think I've also seen them at wal mart. You need a 50 watt or 75 watt .Good Luck with your grow.

Pet smart, I think I paid $12 for a TOP FIN, 50 watt 8". I'd recomend a little smaller though since I had to use a fish bowl instead of a jar.

I got one just a minute ago at a local pet shop for $10. Now I just have to make an incubator. I do have an aquarium, some boxes..do I just put the heater on the bottom and put the jars around it or what? Can I just make one similar to the pf tek style one I saw w/o the plastic containers? Any help is appreciated.

Alright here's what my buddy did. He took his heater and just put it in the fish bowl so the water was above the line (if you look on the heater, there will be a line that the water can not go below) with out plugging in the heater. Left it for 15 min, as directed. Then he put the bowl and heater into cooler with theremometer and turned on heater. After a constant temp of 85 F was reached he placed his jars in the cooler. Thats it.

okay..right now it's just at the bottom of the aquarium heating up. where in the aquarium should I place it when it gets to around 80-82 degrees? I know this will sound stupid, but I'm not using any water so can I just place the heater on the side or the bottom of the aquarium?

If its an aquarium heater, you need to use water, thats why it has the line on it that the water can't be below. You'll break it if you do not put it into water.

okay..so after reading the back of the box i have a better idea of what to do I just need to make sure it's right. Here's my plant..Fill up my aquarium with water and place the heater inside it as directed with the water level above the line on heater..let it adjust to water temp then turn it on and let it run for 1 hr. After all that's done can I just place it inside whatever I'm going to use for an incubator?

Ok, I think you may be on the wrong track. All you need is the heater to be in some water. A quart jar is good, if your heater fits in there. Mine didn't, it was too tall so I had to use a fish bowl, (like for Gold fish). The heater heats up the water which gives off heat, heating up the air, the same air that your jars are in, thus heating up your jars.

okay, cool..that was a good rhyme. It's in a clear plastic cup right now with the water above the line. So after it's in there for 15 minutes do I need to turn it on and set the temp?

Yeah after 15 min, plug in and turn on. My buddy put his into the cooler, without the jars, and adjusted till good temp was constant, then added the jars.
