Outer mycelial layer of PF cakes question??? Do these cakes look OK??? (PICS)
    #9147891 - 10/28/08 02:18 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

For some reason when I washed the cakes off before soaking, the opaque outer layer of mycelium seemed to wash off, leaving the verm poking through all over... Is this normal?

(Pic taken before I rolled them and put them in the FC...)

Do all species have the thick white mycelium that covers the cakes like in the videos, or does the outer layer not matter that much?

-Thanks

seeing verm through the mycelium is normal i assure you. I'm guessing why the "ones in the videos" look different is because they are different strains, different strains have different mycelium...

your cakes look fine, you should dunk them for 24 hours and then roll them in verm...dunno what that greenish color is, could be your camera.

also i would DEFIANTLY recommend against using verm for humidity (unless thats a casing you took pics on top of), its asking for contams...find some perlite, packing peanuts, anything but verm.

edit: gotchya, the cakes look fine lol.

nothing wrong with those cakes, depending on how long you let the cakes sit after full colonization you will be seeing pins soon.  Hope you are using a 6500k light? Believe me it makes the difference, BEAUTIFUL setup!

dude the light you use does not really matter. 12/12 is all that you need to remember.

mushrooms dont need 12/12, if u put light on them for only 2 hours a day they'd be fine, mushrooms don't need light to grow. its just a pinning trigger.

You are correct!

I have used almost no light all the way to 24/7 light, and nearly everything in between, 12/12 works best imho
your grow; use whatever lighting you like best...
