thanks Moe, I have 2 of stamets books which have helped alot. I dont have a good setup though to do have of what he has in the book. I live in minnesota so outdoors is limited to a few months. i picked up that composted manure mix to mix with some household tropical plants that needed transplanting. A 25 pound bag was only 1.99 and I had tons left over. I figured it was nutrient rich enough to try cultivating with. Lemme know any ideas you have. No sense in letting good shit go to waste =o)

One of the experiments with the compost and a fresh cake have started to colonise. The mycelium is slowly starting to branch out into the new substrate and looks strong and healthy.
Now sense this seems to be working, how deep should I lay this in a terrium? Will mycelium grow down as well as out through the substrate? any thoughts?

I'm trying this myself Shroomin.I had some cakes that only produced a few shrooms.So I broke them up and put a cow manure perlite mixture on top of them.I'm hoping the cakes will colonize the manure.I'll let you know how this goes .I know it works with bird seed cakes.I've got a casing fruiting from them right now.

The fresh cake that I put directly on the compost is starting to produce. The base of the cake is spreading through out the compost as well but seems to be doing it very slowly. I have started another that has older cakes crumbled into small chunks covered with about one inch of compost even across the top.
This is pretty much my first attempt at casing so well see how it goes. Im thinking there may need to be somthing else needed as the mycelium is colonising slowly.
