Pressure Cooker Woes

I recently bought a 21 qt pressure cooker (which i thought was a steal) that has been giving me some trouble.
i used it once and it worked perfectly fine; however, the last few times i have not been able to attain any significant pressure due to leaks. i have no idea why the PC would be leaking as it is latched and tightened completely.
pictures won't be of any assistance as the PC looks as if it is perfectly sealed. i know this is a very vague question but i'm looking to retain use of my pressure cooker-- i only got to use it once. any quick fixes?

Did you purchase it used? If so, you might want to check the seal on the underside of the pressure cooker lid. Even if you bought it new you might want to take a look and make sure it isn't corroded and that it is properly in place.

a picture or the type of pressure cooker would probably help.... not all 21 qt pressure cookers are the same.
Try smearing a little vaseline around the seal.

Just a thought:
I don't think you're supposed to throw certain pressure cookers in the dish washer (at least that's what mine says). So perhaps you threw it in the was and the seal got deformed by the heat, and now doesn't work properly anymore.
Maybe?

how long are are you letting it heat up? mine likes to leak on the seal for about 20 minutes till it gets hot enough.

The two main kinds of PC are Metal-to-metal seal, like the All Americans, or the rubber seal ones (like most others).
Both benefit from a very small amount of vaseline smeared around the edge, and the rubber seal ones require it to maintain the rubber in good conditions and stop it from cracking.
If you have a metal/metal seal and it still leaks after the vaseline there is no easy solution as you may have a dent somewhere. If it is a rubber seal one, on the other hand, you should be able to find replacement seals quite easily and that should solve your problem.
Also, try and download the instruction booklet from the manufacturer's website so you can make sure you are not leaving a valve open somewhere or something like that.

My 22qt mirro always leaks on the initial build up but after all the air is expelled its good to go.... If your pc is leaking even after the air inside has been expelled and the weight placed on then you need to look into buying a replacement gasket for it.

You also want to make sure you dont have it loaded where it is touching the lock valve some are right my the handle. I like to use foil in mine, it keeps the bags from touching the side and have had this problem a few times, But yea check your rubber seal. could be your culprit.

it's actually a metal-on-metal seal (it's a bit older).
should i be removing the weight until it begins to shoot steam? i have left it on during the initial heating because i had assumed it would help to achieve pressure sooner.

you want to keep the weight off till there is a steady stream of steam comming out than put it on.

yeah so i allowed a steady stream of steam to come from the opening before putting the weight on..
then steam just began to pour out of literally ever potential seal around the thing.
i had no vaseline, but i'm going to buy some and give that a shot.

If it's an All American I think I recall they have a lifelong garantee. Check their website.
