This isn't from growing, but i guy i know at work was pulling a tarp off of a load of firewood that had been sitting for a while. When he pulled it off, he got a big whiff of some green mold(probably trich). A week or so later he became terribly ill. He was hospialized for about 2 weeks because of this. The mold germinated in his lungs, and caused a severe case of pnuemonia. Just try not to breath in any sort of contam., cuz you never know.

When I dispose of contaminations, I wear your standard disposable particle mask. Usually its only because Im wearing one everytime I open up the jar, as to not breathe excessive contams on the cake. [This message has been edited by vivid (edited December 29, 1999).]

Avoid contact with severely contaminated jars. The spores may be of common molds but you are not normally exposed to the extreme concentrations of spores that can be contained in a badly contaminated jar. Some of these contaminates can cause respiratory problems and skin infections. You are supposed to pressure cook the bad jars to kill everything before cleaning them out. But thats too much trouble for me. I just hold my breath and dump them outside and then quickly wash up or take a shower. I don't do any culture work after jar cleaning since I assume my hair and clothes are harboring loads of spores.

I had a couple of jars that weren't visibly contaminated but there also was no growth apparent, so after a couple of weeks I did the "smell" test. It was one of the most horrible (and STRONG) smells I've ever smelled. It almost made me throw up (I was gagging). I tossed the other no-grow jars w/o even opening them. About an hour later my throat started to hurt. Thankfully I was fine the next morning (hopefully the spores aren't germinating in my lungs!).Be careful with those contaminated jars!

Aspects of some dangerous fungal contaminants. Allergy may develop in those inhaling large amounts of airborne spores, as in the case of workers on oyster mushroom farms. I have watched trails of spores constantly streaming off shiitake caps. Toxic species include Aspergillus flavus, a producer of the most toxic carcinogens known to man. Pathogenic species which germinate and grow within humans, invading tissue such as the lungs includes Aspergillus fumigatus. Generally the people most susceptable to these infections are those who are immunosuppressed (i.e. AIDS and transplant patients), and the elderly/infirm. Bacterial contamination is another story!

yeah... it's like a catch 22. You're supposed to smell it for contams, but if you smelled something...you may already have got yourself sick! Anyway, that's my 100th post, and I'm damn proud of it!!!
