Dear CG69 -
Firstly, let me strongly recommend Stamet's & Chilton's book entitled 'The Mushroom Cultivator.' It has a glossary with drawings and descriptions of contaminants, some of which are pathogenic to humans. Some people sterilize these jars before opening them.
Do not open them in your home! Take them out-
side and dump them in double-plastic bags and
discard them. Open them away from your face!
Only snowy-white mycelium is acceptable. Sometimes honey-colored droplets collect against the jar. This is waste (like urine is
to us) and not bacterial contamination.

I always open my contamed jars in the house, with no fear of getting sick (I've been doing this for a long time now). I didnt get sick even once. Most of these contams will only affect your body only if you ingest them and their toxins. Have no fear, you wont begin an epidemic.

The remedy for this predicament is simple.
I just throw all my contaminated jars BACK into the pressure cooker and cook the shit to death. Then I take 'em outside and dump them in a garbage bag. This is 100% effective.

hey, when you cook contaminated jars, does it smell? hehe, that sounds funny. but seriously, say you're cooking a bunch of trichoderma (today's special, trichoderma in brown rice, with millet and a light sprinkle of low fat vermiculite, hehe)does the cooking make it really stink? well, i wouldn't cook trichoderma anyways since i know it wont make me sick, but other unidentifiable stuff...i'm not too cool with having my pressure cooker smell like rotting apples. yuck.

i just dump contaminated jars in the back yard. Just change your clothes before you go back to your shroom closet.
