I wonder if anybody has done this before. Put a little bit of an antibacterial agent in the LC to prevent bacterial contamination.

When you get your procedure down pat, you won't need anything to ward off bacteria.  I would focus your energy on that.

I've got good sterile procedure already. This is a thought for better success rates.

As for it hindering the mycelium. It depends if your mycelium is affected by the antibiotic you use.

Yes you can and I would recommend Gentamicin that's available from two of our sponsors for this.

But I would also recommend that you learn how to plate and do plate to plate transfers to get a clean growth and it's much better to learn good overall technique doing it that way.

Antibiotics are a useful tool but not a panacea for for poor technique or can make one's technique a little to relaxed. One should learn how to set up a clean area and the usage of a glove box or a laminar flow unit.

I do use Gentamicin in LC for cultures that I'm going to hold in the refrigerator for a time as a little insurance (I also put my cultures in a zip lock bag to) and in agar most of the time that I use for plate to plating.

I have ~8LC's atm, all of which are thriving and perfectly clear, so at least no bacterial contamination. Antibiotics, indeed, are not a panacea. But, a little in say a 1gal LC master would help it fight off bacteria.
