Building a Bi-quad wifi dish
    #9132812 - 10/25/08 06:53 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

so after reading the info on engadget
http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/15/how-to-build-a-wifi-biquad-dish-antenna/
i decided to build one of these to adapt into my desktop wifi card.

I wanted to take a few shortcuts on the design, and simplify it so that i can just use a single SMA connector, with one end into the wifi card, and the other end connected to the copper antenna (carefully soldered as it is a very very tight fit)

it will skip this step from engagdet (where an adapter is used to make the soldering easier)

does anyone think that this will not work for any reason?

It should work, but it is going to be more difficult to construct.

cheaper too.

for the reflector, i assume thati  can just use any metal,
polished aluminum roofing flashing?

also am i correct in understanding that the "outside wire" gets soldered to the bi-quad copper antenna as well as the ground plane (aluminum flashing)?
this image is not at a good angle/resolution to answer the above question.

They make copper roofing flashing.  You can also pick up copper sheets at most hardware stores.  In my experience, aluminum is difficult to soldier to compared to copper... probably because of the oxide layer.

If I understand you correctly, then yes.  Be sure that you understand that the bowtie has two ends that almost, but not quite, meet in the center.

Look at http://martybugs.net/wireless/biquad/ for more ideas and pictures.
