soldering?
    #9123694 - 10/23/08 09:08 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

For a little project I'm doing I'll be messing around with circuit boards, wiring, etc. I have no real experience with soldering and haven't had to do it until now. I have learned though youtube, technique I can hone hands-on, but I don't know what kind of soldering iron I should get.

There's different makes, ways they're powered, prices, so I'm just looking for suggestions, thx

:~)

Well it is just a soldering iron, its not very complex so there isnt any reason to spend big money on one.

get one with that you can change tips on.
or with a light, if you want a light.....
I like the small "guns" over "pencil" style.

Mabey check your local Kijiji, iv done soldering on the motherboard im running with a 5 dollar soldering (practically free)

soldering stations are really nice, and you can adjust the amount of wattage they are putting out, but they are quite a bit more expensive.  I use a cheap ass radio shack one that has a switch for 15 watts to 30 watts.  Has worked fine on random jobs and hacking xboxes.

peace

I have a butane powered Weller which is really nice.  It's adjustable up to 50W equivalent and since it has no cord, I can take it outside and solder on my car and in tight places with no hassle.  It basically kicks ass for all uses.

Edit:  Here's a pic,

You can get different tips for it and shit, including one that blows hot air for shrinking heat shrink tubing (shown)...

don't use a map gas torch, they are for soldering copper pipes.

You cannot go wrong with the Weller brand.  Check out ebay, as there are often tons of soldering stations on auction for cheap.  Main things you want is a temperature control and removable tips.

Here's what you want.

Many different tips are available. 85 watts for when the need for heat is high yet can be turned down for delicate work.

Same thing, better price on eBay

That's what I use at work everyday. It's a Weller with adjustable temp (numbered 1 - 5) with the spiral metal holders and sponge bath. It would drive me crazy to have to use a lesser iron since I use it so much every day.
