Look at these tiny dudes
    #912446 - 09/27/02 04:14 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

After 2 hours of trying to identify, I have no clue they are less than an inch in total height, however some that are dead lying around have longer stems, they grew on steer manure mixed in my garden. Also the dead ones have black inky aps it seems they transform after they die.

Any help is appreciated.
They look too tiny to do spore prints.

Those look like Coprinus micaceus. To verify, look closely at the top of the caps to see if there are some tiny, glistening granules. They should have been growing on some wood debris of some sort (which could be buried).

Good description by including the part about the ones degenerating into ink. That makes the genus pretty easy.

They are not active, and they are edible.

Happy mushrooming!

cik:
Check the spore print on those. Without more description I'll wildly guess that you're finding Bolbitius vitellinus, a somewhat similar mushroom which has a brownish spore print. Bolbitius often grows on dung, and it will also be lacking the tiny glistening granules on the cap.

totally coprinus.
micaceous or maybe atramentarius.
most coprinus are worth eating for food, although the comatus are the best, and they tend to taste a little dirty. if those are atrimentarius (or some other closely related coprini) imbibing alcohol within 48 hours or so after ingesting those mushrooms will make you straight PANIC. it's weird, your heart starts beating fast, and you feel like your gonna die, but you dont. it's called antabuse syndrome.
weird mushroom stuff!!!!!!!!!!

Moe
You're thinking of Volvariella volvacea, the Paddy Straw mushroom. They do look similar, but they have a conspicuous volva at the base of the stem and don't turn into inklike slime as they age.
