Collected some pretty cool pics. of Cortinarius obliquus
I found these to be interesting lately b/c of their close resemblance to Lepista species. These were easy to distinguish, but it's amazing how much these mushrooms can look alike.
Lookee how purple
Got the cortina that time.
They were thick on the ground, can you spot them?
I think these are the same as the species we've seen suspect bluing in recently (that's why I collected a bunch). Bruising; Just the mottled violet, and a tinge of yellow in the base:
Cortinarius melliolens into the mix
And the emetics
Ever notice that squirrels like these in particular?
Hope you enjoyed.

I've been cultivating psilocybes for a while now and am now interested in mushroom identification. Since I live in a Metroplex in North Texas, I don't get to do much hunting. Your gonna think this is stupid as hell, but when I saw the title saying "Show us your Cortinas" It immediately caught my attention. You see I'm of Latin decent so the word Cortinas meant Curtains to me. So there I go looking at all those wonderful pics and then the O.P. says.... Quote:
Got the cortina that time.
The pictures that followed were of the underneath of the caps, capturing the VEIL. So I'm thinking that "Cortinas" was another "slick" word for "Veil". As I looked at those pictures, I started thinking, " Wow, I guess in the wild it''s hard to come across veil being intact". My demented mind started looking at those pictures in an erotic way. "Yea, I guess it really is a sexy picture! The veil being like a Hymen and gently tearing away revealing the delicate spore holding gills." At this point I'm looking at mushrooms in a whole new way. Then Then O.P. comes out with... Quote:
Cortinarius melliolens into the mix
And then I realize that all this time he's been talking about a species of mushrooms! I FEEL LIKE THE BIGGEST IDIOT ON THIS FORUM

LOL I love your description of the veil there Your not an idiot, there is so much to learn when it comes to ID'ing mushrooms it can be maddening. I've learned a shit ton of information in the last 4 months or so, yet I've barley even scratched the surface of it other than being able to pick out a few species on sight. Everybody's gotta start somewhere.

From Michael Kuo:
Quote:
Cortina
A form of partial veil consisting of a cobweb-like protective covering over the immature spore bearing surfaces. The cortina is often very difficult to see; make sure you are examining very young specimens, and use a hand lens!
Cortinas typically disintegrate as the mushroom matures, disappearing entirely or leaving a ring zone on the stem. The genus Cortinarius, the largest genus in North America, is so named because its members typically have a cortina when young.

LOL! So I wasn't so far off in my Latin translation of Cortinas. Curtains have somewhat of a similar function in our day to day lives. They are thin to heavy sheets that are in place to keep the sun out.
By the way, that quote about Cortina was Sexier than ever! It said Make sure you are examining very young specimens. ummm.. I don't want to go to jail!
