a few ???'s from a newbie
    #912150 - 09/27/02 01:34 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

i was in wal mart yesterday looking at some supplies. i was considering getting an underbed storage bin for a fruiting chamber, but i dont know how tall home-grown shrooms get. considering the perlite layer, cake, and fully grown shrooms, what would be the maximum and average height to expect?

also, i dont know if ill be able to get brown rice flour, and i dont have a coffee grinder, can i just get regular brown rice, and attempt to grind it up as much as possible?

I don't know much about cultivation, but a coffee grinder has all sorts of uses and will cost you around $15 at Wal-Mart. I imagine you could use a blender or food processor, but a coffee grinder would probably be the only sure way to get a very fine powder out of it.

Good luck!

my cat uses an 8-10 inch deep storage container. Sometimes they reach the lid, depending on the species. A coffee grinder does work for grinding rice, but it's goign to take you a while to grind much. I use my blender and do about 1.5 to 2 cups at a time. It may not get as fine as you may think you need, but it works good enough. I never use my coffee grinder anymore. As far as brown rice goes, be sure to get ORGANIC. non-organic may have antifungal stuff on it and your garden will not grow on that.

I thought any rice thats fit for humans is fit for shrooms? didnt one of the mods say it didnt matter? im worried now cause it doesnt say organic on my bag, but then isnt antifungal stuff harmful for humans too? its whole wheat flour but the mycellum is growing in two of the 4 jars

My impression is that it's a better safe than sorry move -
just like buying your morning glory from an entheogenic distributor instead of a seed shop

but rice and wheat is meant for humans to eat, if its not organic, then why are we eating chemicals? maybe they wash the rice before making it into flour?

Heh - ok - when
a food is marked as "Organic" that means it has to be produced without certain chemicals (insecticides/fungicides, preservatives, etc.) - it doesn't mean other food is made with only chemicals - just that the "Organic" stuff isn't.

I always use a blender it works great just pick it up and shake it during the process, Understand if you dont use it this way it will not work out as good. Also you can get brf at a grocery store that sells health food its in a bag and costs about 3 bucks for 16 oz.

You always eat chemicals. What do you think everything is made out of?
