Can cakes "expire" inside jars?
    #912077 - 09/27/02 01:03 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everyone!

Due to some recent events i cannot fruit a few jars i have. Can the cakes(fully colonized) be left inside closed jars for 5-6 weeks? They will be in complete darkness to avoid pinning....

Thanks
Fd

i think they can stay in the fridge a while to avoid early pinning but if i were you i would throw some in my garden and make an outdoor patch and let it fruit while you'll be away...
Else, give 'em to me !

I think you should have added a "just kidding" to that as it would be HIGHLY illegal.

I don't know about "cakes". But. I have kept fully colonized grain jars in a closed cardboard box, in the extra fridge, several months & all worked out -- fine.

A cold shock is exactly that, a shock. Generally you only cold shock for about 24 hours. Afterwords you birth. You need light for pinning to occur, so it will not happen in the fridge. He is going to be gone for 5-6 weeks. That is way too long to be gone. Fruiting mushrooms need constant attention. Even being gone for as long as a weekend can be detrimental. Oxygen exchange, temperature and light are important. Sure you could put a grow light on a timer, and install a bubbler system. Maintaining temps wouldn't be bad, but I don't think that FD wants to leave his a/c on for six weeks and not use it. What about contams? Nobody would be there to monitor those would they? Then you get into the whole issue of who would harvest the crop. The lifespan of a mushroom isn't that long. Generally a few days at the most. The fruiting mushrooms would die possibly contaminating the cakes. Dead mushrooms are no good to anybody anyway.

Dude, instead of being such a post-whore, maybe taking the time to read some of the past threads would benifit you. You may learn something. You really need to exercise a little bit of common sense too. Use that ol brain of yours and think sometimes.
