trying to enjoy tool.

I've always kind of derided Tool; what little I've heard of it is that it is mostly droning metal with whiny lyrics. It kind of baffles me that so many trippers around here rave about listening to it on acid and shrooms, when it's always seemed like the last thing I'd want to listen on acid (or any other psychedelic for that matter).
I'm also a huge fan of Alex Grey, and I've been going through his book Transfigurations. Whenever I show this book to friends, they usually reply - "oh, this is that Tool guy, huh?" I never thought of Grey as "that Tool guy," I always just thought his artwork was spectacular and warranted serious reflection.
But all this has convinced me to try giving Tool a serious listen. It wouldn't be the first time that I mocked a band I had heard not much of, totally underestimating the depth of their sound, then listened to more and fell in love. Plus Alex Grey's contributions are a huge endorsement for me. And so I've downloaded the entire Tool discography.
I started out by listening to 10,000 Days on a long drive. It had its interesting moments - particularly when they make a guitar sound like a digeridoo - but 90% of it sounded like I had assumed it would all this time, droning metal with incomprehensible lyrics.
Today I listened to Lateralus. I have to say it's a bit better, but just by a smidge - otherwise it just sounds like more metal drone.
I use the phrase "droning metal" a lot here but I can't really think of a better way to describe Tool as I've heard it so far.
Is there something I'm missing? Have they made better albums? Am I just not a "Tool guy?" Or should I wait until the next time I'm stoned/tripping?

Lateralus is my favorite (only one I listen to actually.) I think Maynard sucks as a lyricist though.
Be prepared for the shitstorm man, Tool has a very serious fan base.
If you don't like it that's cool though, I can definitely see not getting into it.

Although I have come to enjoy Tool, I consider them in the same category as Radiohead... both really hard to get into. Tool has fantastic lyrics that you really have to read up on to understand what Maynard is saying. I would agree that the band is a bit dronish and I think the only remedy for this is to see them live. At least that's what happened for me - pre-bonnaroo tool I was in the same boat as you. Post-bonnaroo tool, I am a huge fan. I guess you could make the argument that most bands would be good with a fistfull of acid; however, tool just brings it to the new level.

10,000 days is the worst cd they have. I think they are all awesome though. If you don't like it, you don't like it IME.

They have a few good song's, but it just all sounds the same to me, they are a little to metal for me, anything heavier then like ozzy osbourne is to loud for me,
i mainly like the Grateful Dead tho, so you can guess i like softer music
plus i think maynard is a little bit of a douche
just my humble opinion
peace out Dm

Never got into them either. Some songs sound alright, but it's a little boring for me.

I like tool... everyone has there tastes so whatever not everyone has to like the same stuff. I would think that most anyone can enjoy some of there stuff, like many good bands there is at least some stuff you can enjoy.
Reflection off Lateralus is such a good track for example...

I like metal - I used to be the biggest System of a Down fan under the sun. And when I feel like getting pumped nothing is better than power metal like Gamma Ray or Amon Amarth. And I also like progressive music, as you might assume from my avatar.
Tool just doesn't do it for me. It's not progressive enough to be "progressive metal." Although there are a few songs I enjoy, it mostly sounds very monotonous.
I'll keep an open mind, and try listening to them the next few times I can't think of anything else to listen to (that's how I ended up liking NIN), but for now I gotta give 'em a .

I haven't really been smoking much weed lately because I'm too broke to afford it most of the time. I wish to God I had some bud right now but I only have beer.
I'll try listening to them next time I get really baked.

when people say they don't like tool, i encourage them to get really high, lay down on a floor full of pillows, put on some really good headphones, close your eyes and listen to this track for the full 11 minutes or whatever it is. the imagery, the drumming, the lyrics, the trancendental guitar drone... it takes you somewhere else, no doubt about it

Tool is OK, but they sound depressing to me. I could never imagine listening to them on psychedelics.

Hey Tchan, I think you missed the mark a little. You say you like progressive but you listen to SOD? Does not make sense and IMO The Floyd are every bit of progressive as TOOL are;) SOD to me is the "droning metal" you describe, each to they're own i suppose.
What you need to do is treat the album "Lateralus" like "Dark side of the moon". Alone, dark room and LISTEN! Before too long you will see what all Tool fans love about tool. My personal favorite is the track "Lateralus" off the self titled album and also try these two songs one after another-Parobol and Parobola. Cheers AV

see above post. their lyrics are very inspiring, and what danny carey does with rhythm is beyond what most rock drummers these days even can comprehend.
granted, their songs that make it on the radio is pretty much their worst material
