whole-rice cake won't pin
    #911895 - 09/27/02 11:11 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

a while ago i decided to try using whole rice as substrate. It colonized just fine and as fast as the BRF jars but it has been in the fruiting chamber for nearly 2 months now, looking like a healthy snow white cake with no pins. I dunked it about 2 weeks ago and still see no results. My questions: how long can a cake survive like this? Why are there no pins if the substrate was colonized as usual? Again, the mycellium looks and smells perfectly normal. Strain is B+.

thanks =)

If it looks like snow, the humidity is too high. Be sure to fan the chamber for some air, give it light, temperature should be between 75-80. You can also try to cold shock it and dunk it to initialize pinning, and use the "search" button at the top of this page.

i understand i sound like an average newb here and i appreciate your standard newbiehelp response, but obviously you didnt really understand the problem.
the cake doesnt look like snow, its white as snow, looking like good healthy mycellium. Its treated as all other cakes which are pinning/fruiting as usual, BUT, its been doing NOTHING for over 2 months.

i dont even care about yield or anything, i'm just interested in how long this cake is gonna go on staying like this without producing any mushrooms, and i wonder if anyone else has seen this happen..

thanks again

i had this happen the first time i grew. i used whole rice cakes and two of them just wouldn't pin even after dunking and cold shocking. i don't know why or if it was just a freak occurence, but i did the double-ended casing on it and things started to pick up. within a week it was starting to pin and it grew some of the most massive cake fruits i've ever produced. the cake was completely dead after this (i guess it just put all it had into those 6 or 7 massive fruits), but it was a pleasant suprise. like i said, it may have been a coincidence, but two months is a long time to watch a cake sit dormant. good luck.

Once again LSA, DO NOT post unless you know what you are talking about.

and how would you know this info isnt accurate? c mon 2 months with no growth, id case it after a month or throw it away. you can get anywhere from zero to like seven flushes, usually 3 is the mean.

Well, I know your info isn't accurate because you have absolutely 0 experience growing. You have nothing to base your information off of. You have trouble understanding the PF Tek. You are dumber than a bag of hammers. Anyway, the cake would not be void of nutrients because the mycelial-stores would not have been used up because the cake did not fruit. After 2 months the cake may be dried out, even dead, but it is still living than it is still good.

thanks, this has been very useful information. I'll cold shock/dunk it again and then case.
