Tough ID's.
    #911833 - 09/27/02 10:28 AM (15 years, 2 months ago)

The weather is finally getting cooler and the rain starting to fall here in the UK. Was out in my garden this morning and found a couple of mushrooms. One type which i have never seen in my garden.

The normal finds in my garden are Hygrophorus Conicus and H. Psittacinus.
One the lawn where all the Hygrophorus *** grow i found:

Now for some info about it:
gills Decurrent
bruising None apparent
spore print white
description tough, non-bendy stalk. light brown/reddish gills. when i cut it in half the stalk was dry inside and when i broke another mushroom it 'crunched'.

I've looked in my book and come up with nothing. The closest i can come up with is Russula Lepida. but my book says its gills are creamy and these were reddish. Also my specimen has no discernible smell but the book says that should smell sweet.
i'm stumped.
hope you have some more insight.

Next up.

Now for some info about it:
gills Free
bruising maybe a little brown but nothing really obvious.
spore print brown
description broke up very easily and it was very soft and fleshy. light brown gills. upon cutting it up the stalk inside was wet. found about 5-6 within a few feet of each other.
the caps on all were split. there was no discernible smell.

Again, ive checked my book and come up with nothing. please help.
thanks
-mike

Great photos and descriptions.

Your first mushroom resembles Laccaria bicolor. I'm guessing that instead of L. amethystina because of your description of the gill color. The easiest way to verify Laccaria instead of Hygrophorus is to examine the spores under a microscope. The spores of Hygrophorus are almost always smooth, and Laccaria spores are almost always spiny.

Your second mushroom, except for lack of odor, strongly suggests an Inocybe. The features I'm seeing to suggest that are the sort of "dirty brown" color to the free gills and the strongly fibrillose, conic cap. Unfortunately, identification of Inocybes to species requires a microscope.

I hope that helps. Happy mushrooming!

Toxicman - thanks for the help. my book only has Laccaria Laccata and L. Amethystea.

Erbaliza - I've just been out hunting Libbys, got back 5mins ago. Nothing. Zilch. :frown:

I have just found some wonderful mushrooms in the woods and once my cameras battery has charged i'll post some pics. Including a few Lepiota Procera/Rhacodes. and some possible Amanitas.

With Laccaria, identification to species is actually pretty tough. The species I suggested is only a guess. Try looking over the description for Laccaria amethystea and see if it doesn't come really close to your specimens.

Happy mushrooming!
