Hey! need some help with wireless.. =P
    #9115414 - 10/22/08 12:36 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

hey whats up everyone? :o)

I bought a new laptop last night and I'm trying to make it wireless.. I'm having a lot of problems and I've been following the directions, it came with a disc...I even watched a few youtube videos and read some forums and still it just wont work...there must be something I'm doing wrong :'(

a bit of info..

I bought a LinkSys wireless-G speed booster router, I have SBCGlobal DSL and the dsl is a regular 4 slot 2wire router the gave me...

I have the Ethernet wire plugged into the laptop..and then plugged into the 1 port on the wireless router. I have the power on and plugged in...and the blue wire (came with router) I have in the wireless router that says Internet and then plugged into the first slot in my 2wire dsl router.

I tried going to the settings "192.168.1.1" and I really didn't know if I should change anything...The disc never told me to go there, I only did because of a youtube video. By the way the lights on the wireless router are on and working just like the video I seen. I went to "home" in my 2wire panel and my laptop ip is under a connection...

This is frustrating me hopefully someone here can help me out (i appreciate it!...)

i have a linksys router, they can be finicky lil bastards sometimes, first make sure that your card and router are working on the same bandwidth (a,b,g) then check your status lights and REFERENCE YOUR MANUAL, different linksys have different status lights. if it says everything is connected try resetting your ip, usually through command prompt, this depends on your OS.

if you cant get it to work usually your internet comapany will come out and set it up for you, i dont know about yours, but mine doesnt charge me anything extra for it.

sure man.. just look on your router, obviously you just said in your post that your router is a G band.. now look on your card, it may be in the manual.. if your card is B or G, it will work with a G router.

the only bandwidths that i know of are: A, B, and G

if that doesnt work then you should try opening command prompt from RUN on your start menu, when in command prompt type

ipconfig /renew

itll refresh all your connections, sometimes i have to do it if my laptop has been on another connection other than my home network

I have never touched the settings for firewall but my 2wire router has these settings:

Settings
Help
Security

Check to enable the features below:
Stealth Mode
Block Ping
Strict UDP Session Control
Help
Inbound and Outbound Control

Checking the box allows the associated traffic type through the firewall.
Outbound
HTTP
HTTPS
FTP
Telnet
SMTP
DNS
NetBIOS
POP3
IMAP
NNTP
IRC
H323
All Other Protocols

Inbound
Remote Management
NetBIOS

and...

Attack Detection
Check to detect the types of attacks below:
Excessive Session Detection
TCP/UDP Port Scan
Invalid Source/Destination IP address
Packet Flood (SYN/UDP/ICMP/Other)
Invalid TCP Flag Attacks (NULL/XMAS/Other)
Invalid ICMP Detection
Miscellaneous

All of those options you can check or uncheck

is there any I should uncheck or check?

I tried that ipconfig release renew and resetting and the disc still says "Your new router does not appear to be connected properly: Error 322: New router or gateway not detected

So I'm guessing it's a firewall setting

Hook up your laptop to the router with using a cable (it should be supplied with the router; anyway, any UTP patch cable should work), use that connection to configure the router and then try to connect it via wireless. First try to get wireless to work without any security, then add levels of security as desired. The autoconfig utility should work as well, but I always set these things up manually.

Call LinkSys and see if they can walk you through it.  When I set mine up years ago they had me though it in less than 10 minutes.

I know this sounds stupidly obvious, but you have tried restarting your computer, right?  Restart, remove the card from the slot and reinsert it.  Then restart your modem (unplug power, reinsert), wait 30 seconds, restart the router, wait 30 seconds.  Then check google.com to see if you're connected.
