Agreed- and most seem to be active too. That was also a crazy explosion of Amanita if you ask me...

It depends on the area. Our area is literally devoid of Gymnopilus luteus this year. I have not seen a single one this spring or fall. Gymnopilus spectabilis has been lowerer than normal. 2004 was a bumper crop for both. This year, not so much.

I've seen very little mushroom life at all this year, it's just been too dry here.

Well, that certainly is a factor. Here, on the other hand, we've had plenty of rain. The lutes just went into hiding. I think the big rains came too early for the BLG. I found like 4 clusters when I could have found 12 on a good year.

Ok. This isn't all of them, but there are repeats and ones that were too poor to post. I included the Gymalike even though it hasn't been identified yet.
That's it. All told there weren't very many and NO G. luteus.

I have more but I'll have to upload them later.
This year has been good for Gyms. I've found 3 types in the last 30 days. All within 3 miles of home. I should check my luteo patch now that I think about it. The pins should be mature and I can get a few fresh prints for a few friends.

I came across a large patch of what I believe to be Gyms and I was just wondering. Are Gyms bitter? Do they upset your stomach? Are they strong? And finally, are there any poisonous lookalikes I should be aware of. Am I asking in the wrong place? Any help would be great. Thanks

Most of them are bitter as an old woman. And no, I don't think they can upset your stomach. Yes, Galerinas can look and smell like them. They are deadly poisonous. Yes, this is the place to ask.
Nice to see you posting in other threads.

The only Gyms I find that always blue are the luteofolius.
The sapineus have dark spots on the caps at times that seem to be bruising but its more of a dark brown bruising.
The Gym species I found recently had an odd "highlighter" blue on the caps edges and on the stipes mycelium.
We SHOULD call this the 2008 Gymnopilus thread.
Go GYMS!

ok none of these are from this year, but this is my collection of photos of Luteofolius
these ones were found in 07, in washington state, on woodchips.
and the following ones were found in 2004/2005 in fiji, on the island of Kadavu, on coconut logs.
^those above two are on a live coconut tree
and the photo to win all Gymn photos
the perfect cluster

Except that orange flat one - that is a stumper to me. Spore prints (one taht took) are rusty orange to brown in some (I have found three separate bunches in three locations) I dried some previous (dark red to brown when dry) and froze some - green colour.
What do you guys think - good start hmmm

you froze fresh mushrooms?!?!
water expands when it freezes, mushrooms are usually 90-92% water, therefore it expands the cell walls of the mushroom, exposing more of the active materials to the air, degrading them.
dry them to a cracker dry and THEN freeze them.

I've found it efficient to store my meaty Gyms in the freezer and drop them whole into water for boiling when the time comes. This seems to yield full potency brew with only a short boiling time. Sometimes there will be some ice containing Gym juices at the bottom of the freezer bag, so I'll include some of that too in the brew. IMO dried Gyms produce a better-tasting but noticeably weaker tea.
Ster, the intermixed Galerinas is a major reason why I ignore small putative Gyms when collecting. The deadlies are usually distinctive enough but I don't want to take the risk.

Definitely a luteo. I've seen luteos ranging from purple to orange to almost a deep red. In fact on my largest luteo large at the moment I've seen all 2 colorations plus a single very yellow variant.
The sapineus and other Gyms I find almost always look the same every time.
Luteos are probably the most variable Gym I've ever come across.
My luteo log also produces when the log is bone dry but they do MUCH better when its soaked for weeks on end.

It would be interesting to see some notes, or even photos, on these collections you are making. Gymnopilus luteofolius has closely allied species in the G. aeruginosus group. G. braendlei and G. pulchrifolius are two of them. I wonder if these macromorphic differentiations are actually indications of different species.
I'm looking at some putative G. sapineus spores tonight. After I finish, I'll type some of it in the thread.

Ok. What we have are four different mushrooms originally described by Peck that are somewhat similiar: Gymnopilus aeruginosus, G. luteofolius, G. braendlei and G. pulchrifolius. Hesler verified this by microscopy in his monograph in 1969. Hongo reported G. aeruginosus in Japan in 1959. I never heard of the guy, but I really like his name. Here's a breakdown.
G. braendlei does not have caulocystidia (sterile cells) on the stem. G. luteofolius has caulocystidia and pleurocystidia (sterile cells on the gill face). G. pulchrifolius has bright colored gills, first whitish, then yellow and finally ochraceous. The spores are brightly colored as well. It lacks caulocystidia and pleurocystidia. G. aeruginosus is much larger though many of the characteristics are the same as G. luteofolius. I have found Rugs in Ohio that were gigantic, nearly 10 inches across in the cap!
There is more to it than this of course. I am going to try and find the species lists for these and see what I can come up with.

Aren't pleurocystidia rare on aeruginosus? Aren't the pleuro also smaller in general compared to luetofolius?
I sent Alan a sample of my luteo gills almost a year ago and asked if he could find any pleurocystidia but never got an answer back.

I remember seeing that bag of gym gills floating around. I didn't realize that you wanted me to examine them for pleurocystidia.
I threw it away a few months back, feel free to resend.
While searching my herbarium (aka the bottom shelf of my fridge) for the Gymnopilus gills I did come across your guilartensis sample. I'll see if I can get some cheilocystidia pics.

Case of the absent-minded professor. All of us are guilty as charged. Sometimes I'll get something in the mail and I'm like, "WTF is this?!?"
Word up on those microfeatures. You've done some homework or know more than the average bloke. Yes, the pleurocystidia are rare in Rugs, but they can be the same size as Luteos.

I checked up on a stump that produced gyms last year. It is fruiting again.
This is the same stump that produced this monster last year.
No greening though. They do seem to be a LOT more bitter than last year.
The lack of greening leaves me kind of sad. But they do smell wonderful.
I could smell these from ten feet away.
