Stored shredded hpoo has some trich on it ...
    #9103576 - 10/20/08 10:36 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Since winter is coming I went out and collected a bunch of HPOO, I shredded a bunch of it by hand (took forever) and put it in plastic bags for storage.

It felt completely dry but it could have had some moisture in it. I mean it was completely shredded and fluffy.

Today I looked in and noticed some of the poo (a small chunk here or there) has trich on it.

Im wondering if I can still use this poo or if the risk is not worth it. After all I am pasturizing. It would probably be used with coir and verm. I pasturize by dumping the poo and verm into a 5 gallon bucket, then I place my coir brick on top. Then I dump boiling water into the bucket, cover and let sit. I notice that after 4 hours or so its EASILY above 140 deg. In fact, I just did a batch last night at about 8 PM and I went and felt the contents and its still noticeably warm .. so thats a good 12 hours that its taken to cool. Probably needs another 4 hours to cool enough to the point of spawning.

So its getting a good pasturizing. Since coir is usually clean from the brick, I like to put the higher risk substrate additives (worm castings, hpoo) in the bottom of the bucket. When the coir expands and absorbs the water it smothers the hpoo thereby sealing it in and keeping it in the higher temps for a longer period of time. My guess is it stays above 140 degs for a good 5 hours or even more this way.

So should I use the HPOO or dump it??

Thanks guys ..
