Why do 1/2 pint jars perform better than pint jars?

Quoted from RR: "Use 1/2 pint wide mouth mason jars. 1 pint jars do not perform as well."
Why is this?

1/2 pints work better because they are smaller. Thus, the myc has less distance to travel, which means colonization will be complete sooner.

It's more than just faster colonization. Pint jars are taller than they are wide, thus the brf packs tightly due to gravity, the moisture flows to the bottom of the jar due gravity, and therefore the bottom half of the jars have a harder time colonizing. In addition, even when fully colonized, larger cakes don't fruit as well as smaller cakes, for reasons yet unknown. RR

I have had good experiences with pint cakes. If you want to make a semi pint cake. You can put a 1 inch layer of vermiculite at the bottom of the jar to create a moisture holding area to help with fruiting. Just don't go over 1 inch in depth because I have found that cubes don't really like to travel very far through non nutrient based media.
Also if it gets packed to tightly, add some left-over perlite to it to give it better structure. Using this and the previous produces some very explosive results.
