Lighting requirements for mushroom cultivation
Contrary to popular belief, most mushrooms require light to develop properly. Mushrooms are not plants, thus do not use light as a source of energy the way plants do. However, due to many factors, some of which are not yet fully understood, light is extremely important in the primordia forming stage with most fungi, and with species such as P cubensis and the oyster mushrooms (P ostreatus), it’s important to provide bright, high frequency light all the way through to harvest or your fruits will be under-developed and of poor quality.

Lights are really easy to find. Go to Wal-Mart and go to the lighting section. GE makes a daylight light, they have either fluorescent or compact fluorescent lights at the 6500k range. Also check target. I grabbed a 24" fluorescent light and a fixture to mount on the wall. I mounted it just above the top trays in my greenhouse but low enough that all the trays can benefit from it. I would grab one of those lights for the future. $8 for the bulb, $8 for the fixture, the investment, priceless! Oh and they save electricity as well! Go green!

I've said this before, but.. I really don't feel like traveling to the US just to buy a light bulb...

Dunk for 24 hours. Preferably held down in a deep container. The pressure will help them hydrate.

will they give worse yields if the cakes get spores on them?
No.

I've heard someone say the spores hitting the mycelium is a trigger for stopping the fruiting stage.
I've never heard of that. To my knowledge and experience there's no truth to that.

I'm getting some pins, but they're definitely less and smaller than in the first flush... any ideas?
Possibly not enough hydration. Maybe low humidity?

You bumped your thread because no-one was responding. People give you their thoughts, and you respond with a smart-ass comment. How is anyone to know where you live? I think most people assume that you really don't live at the North Pole, but if you do, fucking unscrew one out of the ceiling in Santa's workshop. The ceilings should be pretty low with all those elves.
I just use a plain-Jane generic-ass fluorescent light and it works like a charm.

Humidity is a constant 99% in my PMP (yes I have a properly calibrated hygrometer), and I still mist them just to be safe. I mist from a distance, not directly on the cakes. I also fan them a few times a day.
And I don't live on the north pole, but pretty damn close.
Also lighten up, I do really appreciate all advice, but telling me what I can or can't get from walmart is pretty useless to me, as I'm sure you understand. There was no hostile intentions in my post, if the guy feels insulted, let him tell it to me himself and I will apologize to him. No need to turn this thread to a flamewar...

Update.
Here's one of the cakes now... this one is happily sprouting mushrooms in every direction. She's on her second flush now...

And here's a cake of the Amazonian strain, check out the crazy rhizomorphs - it's trying to search for more food beyond the verm barrier!

I almost feel sorry I have to smash this beautiful babe in pieces, but I want to spawn it to coir...
