Or he could have just let the south secede like they wanted to.

I can never give him credit for being the best president/politician since he won on a split ticket and the country kind of sort of went into a major civil war during his administration.  Maybe if he had freed the slaves and resolved the other differences through legislation without the whole war deal, I'd have to give him the credit.

Maybe if he had sprouted wings and flown to the moon to brew some peace juice he'd get some credit.
I'll also point out that FDR was president during the deadliest war in human history.

FDR didn't exactly start the war.  I'm just saying that the breakdown of politics to the point where the opposing side secedes from the country so that you have to beat them into submission with your superior industrial economy to stay, isn't exactly something I'd want to put on my resume as president.  Hell, if he lost, he'd surely be declared the worst president in history.  It's not like slaves hadn't already been declared free in the half of the country that remained.

FDR was the man who, while a world war was going on, held the policies of lend-lease and "all aid short of war."  It's safe to say he held off until there was very clearly no choice.

I often think of FDR as one of the most overrated presidents.  :ohwell:

Ya, because the list of government programs he started that remain in place today could only fill a short book if you stick to the abbreviations.  You know like FDIC, SEC, WPA, SSI, CCC, etc etc

Blaming that breakdown on Lincoln is patently absurd.  Seven states seceded from the Union prior to Lincoln even taking office.  Lincoln wasn't responsible for King Cotton, the Missouri Compromise, Bleeding Kansas, Dred Scott, or John Brown, either.  Blaming Lincoln is ignoring the thousand pounds of straw already on the camel.

And your point is?  Last time I checked the North won the Civil War.  I guarantee that if FDR had lost WWII he would be the worst president in history, but that's irrelevant.

After the yanks won, Lincoln allowed for the raping and pillaging of the south. IMO he's a piece of shit. :ohwell:

Are you serious?

April 9, 1865 - Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox courthouse, effectively ending the War.
April 15, 1865 - Lincoln is killed by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre.

That must have been one hell of a week.  Furthermore, Lincoln's and Johnson's plans for implementing, and ability to implement reconstruction were virtually opposite.  Johnson is generally cited, along with Hoover incidentally, as being the worst president in history.

Absolutely not.  Lincoln was the south's best advocate in the north.  The irony is with his execution the south got a much worse deal than they would have had he lived.

They tore the south to hell, before it was over. Have you ever heard of Andrew Sherman? Who was he working for? Oh yeah it was Lincoln.

Nope.  I have however heard of William Tecumseh Sherman.  I guess war is all roses and glory..  oh wait.  It's all hell.  I forget who said that.  Maybe that was Andy Sherman.  Get out of here with your opinions on Civil War history when you don't even know the names of the players or the relevant dates.

Just because something has lasted does not mean that it is good.  FDR created a few good things, but a ton of bad ones.  Of course, by the time he came around, the US Constitution as just a piece of paper, so why bother actually trying to follow it.  He isn't much different from George W in that respect.

My bad I meant William Sherman. And the date is very relevant.

There is a difference from winning a war and killing people, but there is a line between raping women and burning every building in sight.

the civil war was about states right and lead to the
secession of the southern states, lincoln couldnt have that
on his record as being the president that brought about the
destruction of the union...

It's important to reiterate again that I'm not Lincoln bashing here.  I just think that in a more responsible historical alternate timeline somewhere, there was a Lincoln that championed states rights to calm tempers, but still got an amendment passed to make slavery illegal, or at least paved the way for such a movement.  Hell, the civil war set us back as a country for 35-100 years.

Also, I don't like the precedent set by not allowing states to secede after fundamental differences have been established that cannot be resolved.

it was actually because of his election that South Carolina
withdrew from the union, they did so after he won and just
prior to his inauguration, Buchanon and lincoln both refused
to recognize the confederacy as a new nation, while he did
try on several occasions to prevent the split, he did support
the corwin ammendment which allowed for states that held
slaves to maintain that right in order to win back the states
that had already seceded, it was popular in the border states
but some like Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina had already
made their decision

There's no way I could possibly lose this argument, since the thread is 100% opinion.

I could say Palin is the best politician ever because I think she's hot, and there's nothing you could do about it mwahahahha

This whole forum is opinion. It's all based on believes and how you interpret something.
