Straw Advice.
    #910029 - 09/26/02 04:01 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, I'm new to posting on the shroomery. I know all the basics and such but had a questiong regarding straw. Im moving across teh country this month and wont be settled in until November. I imagined I would have a much harder time finding bails of straw in November. Any suggestions on wheree to grab some that late in the year would be great. My plan is just to stock up on straw for the whole winter season. But thanks in advance for the help.

Most "feed" stores have wheat straw all year around. Other that that, your guess is as good as mine.
PS: edit. One bale goes a long ways.

Thanks for the advice. How much does a bale usually cost at a feed store? And how much spawn will a bale do up? Thanks

well my genital warts purchased a bale for $5 or $10 US I think. They aren't expensive at all. The bale seems to weigh around 40 or 50 lbs. (haven't weighed it though). So using Stamets values that should be able to accomodate between 3 and 5 lbs of spawn. (the warts like more though) *lol*
If someone knows more about agri stuff please speak up.

Welcome, Dr. Seuss. (The real Dr Seuss was a personal hero). Any feed store that caters to anything larger than cats and dogs should have plenty of straw for less than $10 a bale. Straw is used extensively in winter for animal bedding. FYI

Feed store. $4 bale wheat straw year round. Bales consistently weigh 35 pounds. Personally, I'd use close to 10 gallons of spawn to do the whole thing. I would expect yield to be in the 7-10 dry pound range if you know what you are doing.

Smaller amounts can be had in october and november widely available at walmart and craft stores. By November Walmart regularly drops their price to $1 for a compressed "mini-bale" 6in X 6 in X 12 inches. Yields a good 1/4 to 1/2 pound dry and is more in line with most people's safety paramaters and consumption abilities. Use a quart or three of spawn for each mini bale. This same straw is available year round in craft stores for more like $5 a bale.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

I've never owned an animal that is feed straw, but I am pretty sure that they would eat year round.
