Ants

Ants are some of the most amazing and spiritual creatures on the planet. They are totally Zen-like in their focus. There are no lazy ants; everyone contributes for the betterment of the colony. There is no neurosis/psychosis among them. No, they don't hang-out watching the dew evaporate and wonder "Is there more, God? What is life all about?" They do what needs to be done. There is no fighting within the colony. None! An ant will give his life for the colony without hesitation. ("No ant has greater love for his brother than he would lay down his life. - J.C. Ant)
Unity, brotherhood, self-sacrifice; ants make dolphins look like the egocentric movie stars (Hear that, Flipper!) they pretend to be. They have no time for wasteful antics. Dedicated, hardworking and loyal - what else needs to be said?

Wow, an ecology major that thinks altruism actually exists! hehe Or did you just declare that major?

Ants are more robotic than anything else. As far as altruistic... read 'The Selfish Gene.' Ant colonies (at least the ones I'm familiar with) all consist of insects from the same mother and father (with the exception of the queen, who is the mother) - they're one big family.

I don't think altruism exists on the gene level, no.
I DO think altruism exists on the meme level. Doesn't do ants a whole lotta good as their locus of selection is still focused on genes (with humans, it's on memes).

So are you saying that makes them non-spiritual? How is that different from a human parent protecting a child? I am fairly certain that you would sacrifice your life for your little girl. Is that really altruistic or some deep-seated instinct to protect your genes, but glorified on the non-instinctual level as "love"?

*...continued rant*
Look at our King Shrub. He is most certainly the symbolic Daddy of our colony, but not the genetic Daddy. Because this is not gene-based "love", he feels free to take every possible advantage of his loyal subjects.

You can (probably) read my mind on this one.

Different human parents behave different ways, one need only to watch the news to understand this. Humans may have certain predispostions to behave in certain ways, but their behavior patterns appear to have much wider variations than those of ants. Some humans often make decisions NOT to defend their children and even to harm their own children, whereas others will sacrifice their lives for total strangers or even animals of a different species. There quite a few variations of love, and several different influences which affect it, I cannot give you a simple answer stating that it's all genetic, environmental or an intellectual decision, but normal humans are born with the ability to love as much as they are born with the ability to learn languages.

Your description of ants reminds me of the ideal description of a human society, by a government official. Large groups of people do remind me of an ant colony... I'm more like the crazy grasshopper who the ants attempt to eat.

Swami.... you've got it all wrong. Ants are fascists! did you know that they have strict mating rules, and only certain males can mate with the queen. if a rogue male tries to lay his eggs the other ants track him down by smell and eat his ass.
