I'd try one bite just like you said.

Yeah, the poisoning reminded me of the power of mushrooms. Half the time when I am photographing them, studying them and collecting them I forget just how G-damned powerful they really are.  The poisoning jogged my memory though so it's all good.

No doubt Mushrooms are incredible. After all I've learned/seen/experienced I can't help but regard them as magical.

I'm squeamish when it comes to tasting them

cyans and chants are the only ones i have eaten

i think i am just a picture taker, rather than a true forager.

-I- am a true forager

Tasted two little bites of the cap, prepared as stated above.

Now, normally I'm not a real big mushroom eater (except actives ) I dunno, I just never really liked the taste of the store-bought button mushrooms. But this (my first wild edible) was DELICIOUS. I really hope I'm not allergic because the rest of that omelet is calling to me.

How long does it take for the allergic reaction to take place?

If any one is near Waco, and would like some, we would be glad to share, there appear to be more than we can eat, shame to waste them, neighbor has several in his pasture too.. we live in an Oak woods, and this is mostly cleared pasture area, though unused for quite a while. I didn't want to let my 6 yr old boys try them till I did..thanks again for being so helpful..  Barbara

Nothing wrong with that.  I am a hack photographer/student mycologist, rather than a mycophagist.  I forage and eat lots of things, mushrooms usually aren't one.  I was poisoned this year and ended up vomiting blood because I dared to eat a delicious mushroom I was wanting to try for a long time.  I'm still trying new ones, but a lot more cautiously.

Congrats to Beege and Barbara.

We haven't determined that.  I thought it was Lactarius fragilis, but it might have been L. camphoratus or some other Eastern species.  I have the specimens and spore prints intact and am going to have it analyzed this winter.

Mushroom expert says L. camphoratus is edible?

When it comes to issues of edibility I trust little of what Kuo says.  He doesn't eat many mushrooms and often give what I consider to be piss poor advice.

Before spring I'll know what they were.
